    That Birth Year Thing

How is it going with everyone's team(s)? Any effects?

    #2
1/3 new roster - mostly B teamers. Lost 2 scorers. Could be a rough fall.

One kids' team got much stronger - brought up a few really good younger players and cast off a few weak ones (moved to B teams or they left). Other team surprisingly stayed pretty much intact. Lucky I guess. Unfortunately I know a few 8th graders with no "team" to play on in the fall because the rest of their team is in HS. They'll train with the younger teams but it isn't nearly the same. I feel bad for them

It's been incredibly destructive in our club. Lots of infighting, backstabbing and most of the teams are now at or just above roster minimums. I wouldn't be surprised if we had three teams fold over the winter after a rough fall with no subs.

So disruptive for many players, parents, coaches and I am sure the leagues as well. I wonder how many players have been lost overall. Last fall was a happier time.

U8 Got pretty beat up due to the new age bracket change. We lost players who had to move up. and because we were U7 we didn't gain any players. Also a lot of clubs moved their entire teams up to U9 because they don't want to play 4v4 no goalie and a 3 ball in the spring. I DONT BLAME THEM!

No offense but it's U8. They should be learning how to play and getting ice cream after each game. Plenty of time later on to be competitive when your kid becomes the stud player. Don't rush it.

so are you in favor of the 4v4 model and the 3 ball small sided play? I absolutely don't take offense. Its such a pleasure having a normal discussion on this site and not looking to do battle on BOTN.

Not the op but the changes to the ulittle rules in terms of small sided games, more touches etc are good for soccer longer term. You're stuck because your team(s) had already started down one path and now has to switch. Over time kids coming into the system won't know the difference. Same with the age change - love it or loath it we're stuck with it. This year will be the most upheaval, but over time everyone will become accustomed to it.

I got ya, the real issue is the parents. All you need is one parent bitching and filling the ears of all the other parents during our games when im on the other side of the filed and cant defend the change.

Aren't parents the real issue 95% of the time? They're the ones pushing their kids into clubs they shouldn't be with, blaming everything on the refs or the coaches, not accpeting their kid isn't that great, coaching kids from the sidelines (not just their own)....the list can go on and on lol

The first thing I say at the first practice to all the parents is the 24 hr. rule. I say wait 24 hours if its still something that's bothering you then call me. I've had a mom RUN over after a game and say, "you only played my son for 22 minutes! They are supposed to play a minimum of 25 minutes. I times you"! Really lady??

Having your kid learn soccer is most important now. First touches, cut backs, etc. There is no need to stress W/L at this age. Having a good player hold their own at the older ages counts more.

We told our DD two things when she was young that I'm glad we did: 1. We don't care about W/L until she is older and 2. Say nothing about anyone or anything until you are in the car and the door is shut.

We did the first one to make sure she didn't burn out or get turned off to soccer by U13-U14 when kids drop soccer for other sports or other people (e.g. boys). Coupled with 2 we had some great car conversations about all sorts of soccer things. If she had a bad game we'd say don't worry you are still learning the game. You'll master "x" soon enough. If she did something well then we'd praise her and ask how did you learn that, what do you have to do to do it (e.g. Have her "teach us,") etc. Around U9-U10 we asked her when do you think W/L counts and we can cheer for your team. She said U13-U14 so that's what we did. I think we are the unusual parents who up to that point called out to both teams players when they did something well. A little self esteem goes along way no matter whose kid it is. And it is u-little. Such low stakes in the grand scheme of a long soccer career. I think not stressing W/L made it easier on us too. No need to stress out if the team gets blown out. They are still learning. And who really remembers the W/L record at U8?

The second one was to allow the kid to vent but not around anyone else. DD is now U14. I'll ask "how was your game?" and I'll hear "I'll tell you in the car" or "Wait till we get to the car."

As for soccer I think having the kid play different types of soccer with different coaches helped our DD a lot. The 4v4 will force the kids to flip from offense to defense quickly. Also if the coach coaches it like 3v3 then the players learn how to move around/back and cover a spot when a teammate had the ball and is moving forward. I was never a fan of one coach/one club teaching our DD soccer. At the early ages our club didn't have a summer soccer team so we played for other teams. It seemed each coach taught our DD something different.

Same poster. Let me add 2 things:

                            1. DD is U14 and I feel that she is still learning the game but now it more strategies and set pieces.

                            2. 4v4 should teach the kids to pass the ball a lot more than 9v9.

I agree with above that the changes in small sided play for the young players is a good idea. The age change thing? Fine, whatever. Not that big a deal at the club level but changing it at the town (travel) level was unnecessary
