Rolling eyes. What is up with this puerile response?

Our kid was with NJ ECNL clubs up until this past year when she decided academics was more important. So we're in NY now for the fall and spring (winter fun league and summer select still in NJ). The stupid questions about NY/LI soccer come from me. Kid's in the proverbial driver's seat with her life; we're in the literal seat taking her around.

Waaayyyy off topic but has anyone has a kid take the city's SHSAT exam?

        Why not EDP for all?

I guess they are keeping young ages in local premier leagues to reduce travel which makes sense.

NY Surf billed itself to be the biggest, best thing to hit area soccer. Top leagues, top tourneys, etc. So why go to EM when it is clear the place to be is Spirit United:

            EM Applied List: https://events.gotsport.com/events/t...&eventid=50958

            Spirit United Applied List: https://events.gotsport.com/events/t...&showall=clean

SU has many more ECNL clubs entered. SU also has teams from several states. The competition is a heck of a lot better at SU too. Atletico is heading there but I would expect them to go.

            What say you NY Surf?

No need for younger players to be driving all the place. Keep it local until they get older.

There is one NY Surf team headed to Spirit - a LI team.

What age should they start traveling?

That mentality suits local town teams. NY Surf has to be above that to live up to their hype, play with the big boys, and most importantly, be like SD Surf.

Not the OP but my personal preference is to stay pretty local until U12 or so. As we know, it isn't just about distance around here but traffic. Young kids burn out easily and spending 3+ hours traveling to and from a game will only speed that up.

There may be some parents foolish enough to drag their young kids all over the tristate area at a young age, but not many. Chances are their kids will quickly burn out. There are plenty of close in decent clubs to play. Wait until you see how committed your kid is to the sport before delving deeper in the insanity of youth sports

Agreed that's what all top clubs do at young ages

I will agree generally with the above but with a caveat: the club has to have a good trainer for technical skills at the younger ages (or a super skilled parent coach). Athleticism only goes so far.

In the past the Northeast was known for technical soccer and the Midwest for athleticism. I think that is changing now for both areas. Parts of the Midwest have amped up the technical dude but they are limited to the technical trainers who love out there. Here, we have plenty of technical trainers - if you pay for it. The athletic side is growing. But I think it's rare to see teams have both and that is what Surf should be targeting.

That's more a matter of parents shopping clubs carefully. In this very densely populated region you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a decent trainer. Don't be fooled that traveling is the recipe for success. Finding good coaching - which at the younger ages can sometimes be at the mom and pop clubs - and lots of creative play in the backyard with siblings and friends is great for development, not driving everywhere
