    NY Surf SC

Anyone know anything about them other than the affiliation with San Diego Club

Who are the principals behind the NY branch

I know anti-BTON guy won't want to hear it, but you'll find a much better discussion about it there

I used to tolerate Larry until this topic. This was a thread I responded to regarding Surf. Larry gave a similarly snarky comment when someone asked about who the coaches will be. We'll see if it gets posted

New York Surf SC: We are getting a tremendous number of very high quality player registrations for our upcoming tryouts from Long Island, Manhattan, Westchester and CT. Once teams are formed, we will set training locations to be most convenient for each team, based on player locations.

Poster (not me) Sorry but knowing practice locations is important. Why tryout if the location isn't workable?

Larry Miller: Then you won't be at tryouts. Of course for you, and just you, the club will be happy to arrange a tryout in your backyard. Please send me your home address and a date and time that works for you and I will personally see to it that the entire club hierarchy will be made available for just you. Does that fix your tryout location issue?

Me: No need to be so snarky about it. Many of us can't spend hours in the car or afford to hire someone to drive our kids around. Besides, getting field locations and times aren't that easy around here, especially for turf. Plenty of parents have been burned by location promises that turned out to be much further away than originally claimed.

Surf if you're paying attention you might want to try and keep Larry from being your pawn in your PR efforts

Would you really expect anything else?

NY Surf is trying to get out there and quick. It's great to market by getting out to Long Island and Queens. Realistically, those kids are not going to Westchester four times week. There may be one or two. That's it. I'm sure the Surf will have both GDA and ECNL at some point. GDA first. Won't put a dent into LI market. That is still a wait and see between Alby and EM.

Anyone else find the Surf thing a bit rushed and not entirely thought out? Nothing concrete on coaching, locations, etc. I know they're a good club but I also know soccer around here is a cluster fu** and getting something up and running isn't that easy. Was surprised they didn't just come in a buy/partner with a well established club.

Too expensive. They are banking on their name and rosy relationships with USSF and ECNL. May just work. Will have competition though unlike in SD. Many clubs just a short drive away here. Not going to be as easy as they think. It's intriguing because it is new. That will fade.

Surf is a very good club in SD, but they have little competition for kids and thus a huge pool of players to choose from. In the area they are planting themselves in NY they have competition in every direction only a short drive away. The bottom line is they will be another good option and have age groups that are good and age groups hat will be bad. Their sexiness lies with their newness.

I think it is being implied that they will be girl's DAP club and the parents want their players to be in the girl's DAP.

Surf has basically taken Westchester Soccer Club (WSC) as an affiliate or something like that. WSC is a teeny club with less than 5 or 6 boys and girls teams in total. Teams that are there are mid-level quality - not sure about the girls but you can find a boys team listed in division 3 of the NYCSL.

WSC was run by a fellow called Matt who has been trying to grow his thing. They rent fields from the mamaroneck school district which was an incredible coup given that the Mamaroneck/Larchmont lacrosse, soccer and flag football community recreation leagues are already desparate for space.

He probably was willing to pay more for the fields than the other sports fields. Don't expect him to get more time there if this Surf club expects to have a full complement of teams, i.e. more than just 4 or 5. Pretty soon they'll be scouring all of westchester like NYSC does. FCW is lucky in that they have the Purchase campus pretty much all to themselves.

SURF has answer the cost question on Backofthenet but nothing about coaches. I tried to look up the coach bios on their san diego website and aside from some photos could not find out anything about them. Guess things are different out there.

Does anyone know if you have to attend all tryouts for each age group? Also, and this may sound naive, but in their tryout signup they ask for ODP, etc experience and it is a required answer so if a player hasn't done these things should they not even bother trying out?

Meant to say do you have to attend all tryouts for your players age group.
