    Danny A Game's tryout advice

I was wondering what everyone thought of Danny A game's Facebook post from earlier this year about tryouts (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?sto...010400676400)?

Personally, I feel the guy is on point with everything he said, and the only people complaining are coaches guilty of one or more of his points.

"Throughout the year, every week am approached by dozens of parents asking for my advice regarding team/clubs/coaches etc. I tell them all the same thing, #DO #YOUR #RESEARCH How many times does that coach/team cancel training? Ask around.

How many players are on the current roster? Ask around. How much is tuition? What does that cover? Ask around. Do they charge you extra money for side programs? Ask around.
Do they take players on mid season? Ask around. Do they ban you from outside training? Ask around. What is there turnover ratio every year in regards to new players and cuts? Ask around. Do they have a rule where they change coaches every year or two years? Ask around. What if that one coach has one style and the other coach has another? Ask around. What is the past success of the coach? Ask around. What is their philosophy as a coach? Ask around. What is their style of play? Ask around. Have you reached out to past parents who took part in that club or coach to give you an idea of how things are ran? Ask around.

Do they rotate player positions? Do they have equal playing time? Best players will play? Ask around. Have you gone to a session to see how they conduct things? Ask around. Do they talk about their league status more than their player development? Ask around. Do they promote tryouts non stop? Ask around. Did they poach you or reach out to you to join the team? Why would they do so if they are good at what they do? Ask around.
Is the coach approachable? Do they interact with the parents? Ask around.

Is there something that stands out from them to another club? Ask around. How much money has one parent spent to just that one club/coach in 9 months? Ask around.

Every club in the state has players going to division one colleges. Some players who play in EDP will go D1. Some players who play in ECNL will go D2. Every club in the state will be able to offer a good league to play in or a high level tournament to be accepted into. You should be asking or seeing what they are able to do for your child. There are a lot of good coaches who coach for top programs in the state but the BAGDES, the LEAGUES, the RANKINGS, the COLLEGE COMMITMENTS can get parents caught up in the bright lights. Before committing to something. Before paying a heavy fee. Before you drive 2 hours to training 3xa week. Before you board the plane as a 11 year old. Before you spend the next 9 months out of the year committing most your life to a soccer team, do your research. You will be amazed to what you find."

          Hi Danny,

Why do the girls you train look great in practice but fall flat in games? Just ask around.
Why do they do scissors into a Maradona only to lose the ball? Just ask around.

Didn’t he just follow SC around and burn his bridges with numerous clubs for breaking all his ‘ask around’ questions in his Facebook post.

" I don't practice what I preach" #AFraud. Do you your research and find out why a coach moves from on team to another until he/she runs out of places to go.

Pretty clear there are a bunch of coaches and club reps on here who can't handle simple questions from parents. Also, there are a bunch of parents looking at their coaching situation and feeling uncomfortable with the answers. These clubs and coaches are too used to doing whatever they want and getting parents to pay the bill. Attacking the messenger and how the message was posted instead of the actual content is interesting and shows they have zero arguments.

His points are valid even if his style of communicating is a bit grating. Our 'big time' club spends more time recruiting than training the players that are already on the team. As much as recruiting is important, we should not have 3-4 tryout kids at every practice, with the coach needing to evaluate them when the current team hasn't even had a half season to play together with the fall HS season and the bad winter weather.

This post hit everything on the nose. I laughed at the Facebook comments from coaches complaining that Danny is being "unfair" and basically calling him a traitor. Anyone can connect the dots with this post and a few coaches that get blasted on here.

His questions and associated points are valid, but his summary paragraph is overly dramatic. It all comes down to the individual kid and what they want out of their soccer experience. The cream of the crop usually want everything associated with top training, top teammates, travel and top competition. Everyone else should find a spot where they are comfortable.

Cramming 20+ kids in a tiny area and charging them $20 per head isn't any different than what clubs charge. I like Danny and some of the training is fun for the kids but because the area is so reduced, that type of training doesn't help kids playing on larger fields where they need to take their touches into space. You can find better ways to train your kid on the side where you can tailor the training and provide him 1:1 attention.
