Was chatting with a friend of mine who is an assistant AD at a mid-major D1 and asked about the impact of Covid on the landscape for women’s soccer. 3 main takeaways at least for their program were:

1. Although scholarships remain at the max of 14, the overall pool of money that is allotted is down about 20% vs Pre-COVID.

2. Salaries and new hires are frozen for coaching staffs, mainly due to also severely decreased athletic budgets.

3. The domino effect in class to class recruiting will be felt all the way through Class of 2024, maybe even 2025. This means less spots and more loaded rosters due to the missed Covid season of 2020.

If you have a class of 2022 through 2024 player buckle up for more competition and less $$ than ever.

Yes it's going to be a mess for awhile. Not sure if anyone got hit harder than the 21s though - no showcases last year (last chance for those not yet recruited), no ID events, and it's way too late now. 22s at least still have a little time to get in front of coaches before the fall.

Spot on analysis. Very difficult landscape now as if the before was easy. Better focus on academics and not chasing scholarships by spending thousands upon thousands, traveling to California, Texas, Arizona etc. Do your homework people.

The NCAA is one of the most corrupt and stupid orgs in the history of civilization. They gave every player an extra year of eligibility when there was zero reason to do that for most. Keeping the dead period on for this long is also stupid.

I assume by your answer your daughter isn’t currently playing in college. If you say there is zero reasons than you are biased. My daughter and her teammates truly appreciate giving players an extra year and her coach is happy that they are coming back. Why do you take issue with the additional year?

The dead period has absolutely nothing to do with non revenue sports, ie soccer. The decision is driven strictly about what is best for power 5 football and basketball....neither recruit in the summer much so save budgets on travel etc, let's kids come to you ...then open up again when you can go watch HS football in Oklahoma

Every athlete I know is glad they have a chance to play, even if not all will be able to take advantage of it. They shouldn't be short changed over something that was totally out of their control

The crazy thing is it will get extended yet again apparently to Jul 1. It’s freaking insane. All because of bball and football. Soccer they don’t care about too much.

If you are in college it's great. But there was no reason to give kids who had a full season an extra year of eligibility, especially those who still had a RS year left to use. I could seel possibly giving seniors one more year, not freshman. Only next year is covered by the NCAA on numbers, and most colleges are not covering the $$ other than for the revenue sports.

That is correct, that’s why the ripple effect will be felt through class of 2024 and maybe even 2025. About 40-60% less spots available on avg for the next 2-3 recruiting classes. Tough luck with the Covid situation.

True. It is an option. It is not required to be taken. If school can't or won't accommodate, look around. Nothing requires player to stay put either. Find what works for you. If you like playing, why not.

I've been shocked at how long it has already gone on, especially since football and basketball essentially control the NCAA and they're falling behind in their time lines also. Things are opening up, schools returning to normal for the fall. I have to believe this is the last of the dead period extensions

Yes just like we thought April 15 was and so many dates before that. It will likely get extended again. I hope not but we’ll see.
