    Club soccer and winter sports

    Hello,
What are your club’s expectations regarding winter hs sports and club training? Does your club support multi sport athletes or discourage it?

Kind of depends...lower level clubs don't expect as much of a commitment, higher levels ones do. Can vary by coach too. Winter training tends to scaled back making most winter sports more manageable than fall or spring sports. Best bet is always have a discussion with the coach. They'd rather know than now know.

Soccer is number 1 regardless of what other sports you’re playing. Period end of story.

Good clubs will allow players to play winter sports.

One of the best high school soccer players that I've seen in my area is also one of the best basketball players.

Makes too much common sense to let athletes play other sports....not exactly conducive to the youth soccer environment of contracts and limitations. No other youth sport has this nonsense.

Other sports are also becoming all year, not just one season. Baseball has fall ball and LAX has fall activity now also. Summer leagues etc. It's good for the bottom line. Even when you want your kid to be a multi sport athlete and your club cooperates, kids often just don't have time and parental bank accounts aren't limitless. Families are pressed into choosing

Two girls at our HS who are ECNL players also play for the varsity basketball team. One has a D1 soccer scholarship commitment.

Nice to hear. To think a coach, club or parent would discourage another sports is pathetic. Especially anything before high school. Specialization is just stupid when you ask yourself. For what?

Some just don't want to play another sport. Mine doesn't, we tried to get her to look at another sport but to her the off sport is futsal.

Winter sports are much more feasible if your kid is playing with the high school. Practice and games are generally right after school. Our winter club soccer sked is one evening practice and one Sunday afternoon. Doesn’t conflict with HS.

The catch is that coaches in other HS sports like their kids to play club too, and that’s much more difficult if you’re also playing at an elite soccer program. But with girl’s HS programs, there’s room for kids with ability who don’t play club to find a spot on a team, depending on the sport and the school.

At our HS, numbers are much higher in boys sports like basketball, and more experienced club players make it difficult to earn a spot if you aren’t getting club experience also.

That’s great to hear, but unfortunately our teams coach has verbally discouraged the girls to play other sports. It’s a shame because I think it would be good for their development. The youth soccer world has become too much of a business. Not sure if it’s because they are British and have no perspective that other sports beside soccer even exist.

Discouraged on what grounds? It distracts from their work on soccer (it certainly doesn’t have to) ? It might lead to injury? (I suppose, but it also helps enhance fitness and develop qualities like agility). Seems to me a tad intrusive for a youth coach you are paying (rather than a pro team which is paying you to play) to dictate your kid’s other athletic endeavors especially if they don’t directly conflict with his practices. If kids at places like PDA ECNL are also playing sports like HS B-BALL, maybe your coach is unnecessarily overstepping his bounds.

i don't see how there aren't conflicts - unless the basketball team isn't very good and/or one or both of the coaches is extremely understanding about missing things. Otherwise practice and play are every day and playoffs go into March, even overlapping with Jeff Cup under normal circumstances. How are there not conflicts?

NJ HS BB season ends March 6. Jeff cup weekends for HS aged groups are last two weekends of March. Most HS reg. season games take place after school on weekdays.

I wasn't just talking about HS but that's fine. And no, most HS games do not take place "after school". JV and varsity games are very often at 530 and 7. If you think there aren't conflicts, you are mistaken.
