We happen to live in a big town with a decent HS soccer program and a good academic HS. But as my daughter closes out her elementary school years, we've been surprised to find a number of her club teammates (and some former ones) from smaller towns or bad HS soccer programs getting recruiting to play soccer by private and parochial schools. Literally getting invited on tours, told that financial aid will be likely. Some of the recruiting being done by club coaches for certain schools they seem to have longstanding relationships at. Just how common is this, and what are the rules?

Some private schools will find money for athletes, others only based in financial need or academics. Keep in mind now private school enrollment is down because of the economy. Even getting a partial tuition is better than an empty seat.
The decision to go private should not be driven by sports but academics, fit etc. If your kid quits or the soccer sucks then what? It isn't for everyone. Nor are all private schools significantly better than quality public school districtsComment

I know for a fact Pennington school is a huge recruiter for their sports programs. They give lots of financial aid to those they want for their sports teams. Also in PA - springside Chestnut Hill does the same lots of financial incentives for athletes. Some families are big supporters of private education and can afford it. Nothing wrong with that, schools wouldn't survive otherwise without them. No excuse for lousy credit but your own. Even people with low incomes can have solid credit scores. Of course moving is never easy but staying in a bad district isn't helping your kids. We've lived in a shoebox for years to be in a top 10 district - with three kids it's paid off in spades + tax deductions on the mortgage and SALT. Even if we could have gotten them into a private school @15K a year = 60K per kid for HS = more than one year of college tuition and 180K total = a large chunk of a house. Chances are there are better districts that are still commutable for work. If you can get good FA from a private school that's one thing, but how are you affording pricey club soccer if you're that strapped?Originally posted by Unregistered View PostComment

You don't know what caused someone else's credit failures. Could be a family issue, failed business, accident, all of the above or something else entirely.
