I realize season has just started and will have a better idea in a couple months, but wanted to check with you other ECRL/NAL team parents on play time. Do any of your coaches sit kids for an entire game or do they try to get everyone on (16 field players)? For the non-starters, how much play time do they get on average? Should I be satisfied with 15 min a half?

15 minutes a half out of 40 minute lonh halves is wasting your time at the club.

        It depends -

If your on a club where your trying to play up and earn time, 15 mins is enough to prove yourself and increase time on the field if deserving
If you have been there a while and are not trying to 'make the team', 15 mins is not enough playing time

Also, there are a lot of families that still believe the training is much more critical than the games at this age, so some families choose to stay
on for 6hrs of high level training a week.

if staying on a team where your kid gets very little playing time in matches, might be a good idea to watch practice very carefully to make sure your kid is getting quality minutes in training. are they subbed out frequently during practice drills in favor of the starters? if so, that 6hrs of high level training might not be that great at the end of the day.

as far as i know, there is no such thing as subbing out during practice drills, everyone practices the same. folks talk about "meaningful minutes" for games, just wondering what that is and how other clubs handle it. for this level of play at this age, are there some kids on your teams that play maybe half the game only?

My son plays for a top ECNL team. We have some kids that don’t even get in the whole first half and maybe 15 minutes in the 2nd half. Playing time is earned at this level. The club tells us straight out in the beginning. No lying about it. You know the facts and you decide.

ECNL top team is one thing, ECRL/NAL is another. Most of the kids on those teams were pulled from mid-tier EDP teams. If your kid is 12/13 years old and playing a minimum amount on a team like that, unless they are getting top level training from the club, it's not worth it.

I agree with this…. The ECRL and NAL teams outside of CSA North aren’t very high level teams. They are a step below the teams that still play EDP 1, 2, 3 and maybe even 4. If you are not playing heavy game minutes, what is the point? The exposure from NAL and ECRL is no more than EDP. You are wasting time and money traveling twice as far for less return on your time.

my kid's 2011 ecrl team everyone plays every game, but minutes vary. for example the CBs will usually play the whole game and for the most part the rest of the positions are rotated. some of the better kids will play longer but everyone plays at least half of each half i would say, so call it 20 min a half. when it was the 35 min halves, better ones play 20 and bottom ones play 15 on average. agree with above that unless on top level ECNL or MLSnext team, kids on the team should play pretty similarly because ECRL, NAL, USYS/EDP are all similar level and no one should be benching kids to win games.

I don’t know about you no matter what the abc league is the kids are still playing prioritizing winning and resorting to kick ball. Nothing wrong with this other than it makes a game very boring to watch. Gone are the days of watching a team that doesn’t panic when the ball comes to their feet. Come to think of it they played kick ball since very small so it’s the same. I hope some of these teams take lessons from clubs that are developing top players in Europe. And raise the level all around.

last game I watched were ECNL teams in PA tournament.

I wonder why this is a rule of thumb (I agree with you; I've seen it to be the case as well). Sincere question - why are CBs not commonly subbed?

Less running/sprinting than the other positions. In theory, they get less physically tired. (Obviously they can still get tired and also mentally tired, which is why soft goals can happen at the end of the match)

Not as much running and also feel like its the least 'popular' position with young kids so maybe a way to encourage. With ball playing CBs (which hopefully all top level teams aspire to develop), there is a lot of know-how and positioning and brings stability to a team. Inexperienced CBs definitely cost games.

For my kid's team they are light on defenders and heavy on MF and attackers so just about team balance. Whilst some kids can play both RF and RB for example, not many are as versatile to play CB esp now with size becoming so varied with pre and post puberty. So many teams just put their biggest fastest guy up top so need some bigger CBs to help counter
