    Is this a good response?

My son's U14 travel soccer coach asked each player which position they wanted to play right before a scrimmage. My son's response was "I don't care, I'll play any position."

depends on the coach. Some like the confidence and team first attitude of saying i'll play anywhere. SOme prefer the kid be more vocal and self advocate. Personally, as long as the on field effort is high, i would be happy with the former. Being willing to play anywhere coach wants and putting max effort is great.

My son's intention was that he'll play anywhere he's needed (he can play multiple positions) but I was concerned that the coach might view it as indifference. The coach is new so I didn't want him to have a bad impression.

I think it's a great response. Kids should be playing anywhere anyway, at least a little. The thing is....play.

Here is a true story, a player was identified and brought to the National training center. When they asked the player to play outside back they were very hesitant and at first resisted because it wasn’t there position and the player was not happy but played there reluctantly. That player was never invited back a second time.

Crystal Dunn was a forward in HS and college. Now plays outside back on the NT team. A good soccer player can play almost any position.

Alphonso Davies was a forward winger in MLS. Went to Bayern, they asked him to play left back. You think he said no? No, he became one of the world's best left backs.

Do you think it was due to the player's reluctance to expand his playing role or was it maybe the player didn't perform well in the role they assigned for him? If it was the latter, then the player probably knew they couldn't play the other position well and may not get good reviews. I guess either way, it exposed the player's limitations. It goes to show players should not be one dimensional, especially at a young age.

It had nothing to do with reluctance. They wanted to play the holding mid position and this person just didn’t want to play another position. It was clear to the staff that this player (while very talented) is not coachable. Players should be receptive to a “new pair of eyes” who maybe wanted this player to expand their horizons. Clearly, the coaches thought this player was a very good player at their position and wanted to see them play something else.
