Families should be doing that anyway. Maybe the blind faith that some school is going to offer their kid is shaken. This is the thing, parents should have a pretty good idea of what the upside of their child is long before you get to the point of paying large amounts. Too many get swept along with others and dont look at that . If your kid does not show you enough to justify the sacrifices, move on. The places dropping womens soccer are probably not very good at it to begin with. There is a lack of honesty when assessing the reasons parents continue to spend on youth sports. A lot of it has to do with the fake notion that by NOT doing it they are somehow placing their kids at a disadvantage.

Many families are fully roped in by the end of middle school. By the time they realize Jamison or Emily isn't going to see much money, if any, it's way too late. If they really knew the odds before HS probably half the "elite" players would drop out and go back to EDP or similar.

That may be just what we need...we spend roughly 15-20k per year in total for my kids to play youth soccer....that’s insane.

I cannot believe this oppressive state we live in where parents are physically forced to drive their kids to practice and make them play a sport that they don't even understand.

The problem is all the travel with flights hotels meals rental cars etc it adds up. I’m not talking about just club fees and uniforms etc....

Extra Sessions + winter: $1000
Uniform: 250
2-3 showcases: $4000-6000
4 Away Game weekends (hotel+food): $800
Gas and Tolls (practice + games): $1000
Total: $10,000-12,000

No way it should add up to $15k-20k a year for 1 kid.

Lets see...plan tickets for you and your kid to at least 1 showcases in Florida plus a car trip to SC. League travel to Lancaster and Boston Mass, Farmington Conn and Bowie MD so figure 2-4 over nights for games. Any other showcase they might go to like Disney. Plus Playoffs and finals.

So you are looking at 2 weeks roughly of hotel stays, 2-4 trips that require a plane plus rental car, food, gas.....That is easily $5-$6k plus club fees and uniforms and any extras you purchase.

i agree. Ego is the profit in youth sports. Most of these so called elite things should be a fraction of the size. Elite should be earned based on the subsequent achievements of the players who you help develop. Instead, its just a name and a way to attract egos.

forgot to add, its not the odds alone. Its just actually having a clue what elite players actually look like. its one thing for a really talented player to not achieve potential for whatever reason, but the number of players whose ability (other than parents ability to pay) is questionable at best is staggering.

Peak recruiting/showcase years you can hit $10K without breaking a sweat, but much more than that means you're taking the whole family with you and that is a personal choice.
