    Tactics?

I haven’t noticed tactics being taught at our club for u13 age. Is that something that should be taught now? It’s mostly technical and small sided games at practices.

My favorite coaching tactic is when a team gets up by a goal or two and in the last few minutes the coach starts subbing to the far side of the field every stoppage. I think that teaches great sportsmanship and I love seeing it at young ages.

Depends on the level of the team. Most U13 teams won't be able to execute complex tactics, they are still learning to get a handle on the physical aspects of the sport and probably cannot reliably hold the ball too long or through too many passes. Yes that is the goal, but things often break down and players need to be spontaneous.

Maybe the very top teams will be able to handle some more complex sequences.

Of course it depends what you mean by 'tactics'. If you mean field positioning, yes, that should be a part of the strategy!

Here's what my kid's team (u12) is doing:
        - work on off the ball play - here is where you need to be depending on your position (F,M,B) and how the play is evolving. Nothing fancy, just bare fundamentals
        - work on passing and playing out of the back. Lots of focus on this. Some kids still just refuse to pass and think they can out dribble 1 v X. Sigh...
        - work on involving GK - passing back to GK, playing out of the back vs just goal kicking/punting all the time. Lots of focus on this. team lost some games due to poor execution, but if the GK sticks around it'll pay off handsomely going forward
        - a little bit of work/in game coaching on throw ins and set pieces. Nothing fancy - make space/turn body on throw ins, positioning on free kicks, corners.
        - allowing / encouraging runs down the line by backs when they have an open lane and making sure they drop back once they pass / take a shot

This is done at a small club at lower EDP level.

Much depends on what coach has to work with: kids discipline, technical ability, desire to play hard, coachability, etc.

Note that they have lost plenty to more "physical / bigger / faster / kick and run / I am going to out dribble you" teams as they are learning to execute. Hard to watch as a parent when you know they are technically (pun intended) better, but get beat, sometimes bad. However, as they get sharper with passing and understanding their positions, they are starting to win and make the some of the same teams look a little silly in the process.

Tactics? We don't need no stinking tactics!

No, nothing needed at this age. Mostly just general discussions over what they'd like them to do, but at that age it's about technique, technique, technique.

If what you mean by technique is simply ball mastery, then I strongly disagree. U13 is when they start 11v11, right? How can you expect them to be good by HS if they do not start to learn off the ball play, advance through passing, learning to see open lanes, involving GK, etc. It does not need to be complicated, but the fundamentals need to be laid down. Otherwise they'll get eaten by teams that maybe a little bit slower and a little bit less talented, but working as a unit and executing what I have listed above.

First, most of that is technique. The master of the physical skills of the game, which is passing and movement and shooting and dribbling. Tactics relate to formations, positional setup, etc.

Second, who cares if they "get eaten"? It's youth soccer, and you are either in it for:

              1) Fun and exercise. Doesn't matter what the results are
              2) To win, and you can just do that in a lower league if that's what you want
              3) To develop, and the results have no bearing on that.
