I wish more refs would give cards where kids DELIBERATELY run up and stand in front of the ball to slow a restart (at least starting with U11). That's something that's being coached and you can think about it like you are giving the coach a yellow for teaching that. If the coach is yelling "get on the ball" - go give the coach the yellow for unsporting and spend a minute explaining to the kids what a cautionable offense is in this situation. In one of my kid's U14 game this past weekend, the other team literally made a wall a foot away from the ball EVERY time there was a foul.
Everyone loves to complain about refs, but there is a lot of things we can do to shut a lot of the complaints down. Some of the really bad situations I've witnessed as a parent have been because the ref didn't have control of the game or started in with parents on the sideline. Its all totally controllable. I was a parent first and have gotten into refereeing a bit later. I explain my approach to the kids and coaches (if they meet me before) at the beginning of every game is the way i approach things at like U12+:
- When I call captains/coaches together, I tell them that I'm going to have very little tolerance for dissent and I want questions about calls to come from either the captains or the coaches.
- I explain that Im going to let them play - soccer is a contact sport, but keep your arms down and make sure you are playing the ball. If they game starts to get chippy, I'm going to reign it in quickly.
- I remind them that I'm going to let them play though with an advantage and i show them the arm motion to indicate that.
- Im going to err on calling fouls and even give cards for gratuitous slide tackles. The boys especially U13-15 love slide tackling for some reason, but that doesn't mean I'm going to let fouls there slide. Keep your spikes down and it shouldn't be excessive or unnecessary. If its remotely from behind, I'm probably showing you a card.
- The standing on top of the ball BS is going to get you a card. Don't do it. If we are on a football field that is marked, its clear that 2 lines are 10 yards.
- I don't interact with the spectators AT ALL. I'll give coaches warnings and if they don't control their sidelines, I'm giving them the card.
Takes less than a minute to explain all of this and makes the game (in my opinion) better for all.
