Is it really a big deal if a player makes varsity as a freshman? Wouldn’t it be better to be a transition or swing player, that practices with varsity and then excels at the JV level?

Mostly depends on the size of the school. Small schools it's not unusual to have freshman on Varsity. Large schools it's a bigger deal.
