the number of kids that get jammed on a team is my number one gripe. It criminal to have more than 18 or 19 on a team

It’s bc it’s people who care less about the kids and push direct soccer and look on their cell phones half of practice

If you watch the game it’s emblematic of how the US plays. We want to create superstars. We play hero ball after hero ball. Through ball after through ball. In the first 5 minutes I watched the GK try to hit the striker several times bypassing the entire team only to give possession right back to France. We don’t play simple. We don’t play as a team. We want to glorify the goal scorer instead of glorifying the team. This isn’t basketball or football the best athletes don’t win. Until we develop soccer players and not try to create super stars nothing will change

Europe has an easier time identifying talent bc if you are 14 and great they will throw you in with the “Big boy’s.” You will know right away if they can hang or if they will be able to hang. The ones that can hang at 14-15 will be much better off for it. The others at 14-15 get hard reality that their soccer career is never going to be pro!

This is 100% the new line. Let’s have this large roster so kids are “hungry” for a starting spot.

Stop blaming the clubs. While they are part of the problem, they are only doing what the federation allows them to do. This started years ago when a huge wave of international coaches flooded to the US to try and make soccer a career for them here. Unfortunately, with the way youth sports are today, not just soccer. That’s what we are all stuck with. Like it or leave it. We all have that option.

how do we fix the problem. Leave the clubs alone. Let them continue to make money and train and develop as best they can.

we need to fix our ODP programs nation wide. Go back to the old days. ODP should be free and for the best of the best. No charge except for uniforms and travel that is required. Let’s use NJ for example. 4 ODP regions. N1, N2, Central, and South. Only U13 and older. 1 team per age group. On the boys side, MLSnext, ECNL, ECNL RL, NL, and E64 coaches should encourage their players to attend their regional tryouts. In the girls side, ECNL, RL, GA, NL, and E64 should do the same. Of course, regional tryouts would be open to anyone no matter what club or league you play for. Each region picks their teams. Best of the best from each region of the state per age group. Regions teams have round robin friendlies. Joint train sessions. 1 state team is identified per age group. If done properly. This should be your true top 18-22 players in each age group for the state of NJ. This should be replicated across all states. For the larger states that have 2 or 3 charters like NY, PA, CA, TX etc. They have multiple state teams. The state teams can now come together and have friendlies locally and showcase tournaments in front of our national program scouts.

once you are chosen to a state team. Any conflicts with your club team as far as training or games. State team takes priority.

Any international eligible players that have US Citizenship will also be given looks as well.

this is the only true and fair way to go out and recognize the top talent in each state and nationally.

I’m sorry but talent identification is not the issue. Not the problem at all. We aren’t fundamentally focused on the right things. Watch the teams from other countries and then watch us. It’s not an athletic thing. It’s how we tactically play. We play to be on the commercial. We play for the ESPN highlight on every touch. We don’t consistently make the (right) simple play. For example, instead of the GK bombing it over and over to try to hit a striker surrounded by 2 cbs, play your cb and then the cb plays the cdm. Keep possession, play the open player and be patient. That’s what Spain does. If it’s not there recycle it. We don’t do that. We won’t even win a game in the Olympics and nothing will change

Completely understand. Don’t you think it would be beneficial to have the best 18-22 players from each state training together 3-4 times each month with a curriculum that’s designed by our national team coaches. This way when the players picked for youth national team camps are all being taught the same style of play and the transition is easier. Rather than having a pool of players from different clubs and leagues that are being taught different styles now have to come in to camp and have to gel to and adapt to many different styles.

What club team would release a player 3-4 times each month? CA/TX are enormous, how would that even work? Who would pay? And what happens when the coach changes, what happens to this "same style" then? Great players can easily adapt to different styles; the European players can learn everything during the few and compact international breaks because they're accustomed to learning different systems and their fundamentals are already brilliant.

I mean in a utopian scenario maybe, I guess. But there’s so many things that would cause huge issues. 1) who coaches? So let’s say it’s a pda coach. Then every single kid on that team will want to go to play for pda so they can get favor with him. 2) who says who is the best 18/22. Some unbiased panel? Good luck finding that. 3) US soccer hasn’t gotten the style of play right yet at the senior team level (Hayes is on the right track) why would we replicate poor tactical coaching down further? 4) who runs this massively overrated political machine? Usys? lol? Usclub? USSF lol? Learning different styles is critical to being successful in a game? For example, you may need to play a 5-4-1 in a low block against a superior opponent. Then they might be behind by a goal and need to change to a 4-3-3 to go get a goal. You may play a team with a strong middle and need to move the ball down the wing in a game. I’m not sure what you’re thinking here but this will only make things worse not better. Go to Europe watch games you will get it

Did any one actually watch the men’s USA/France match? The Americans absolutely held their own with this talented France team with 3 seasoned players who scored the goals. For 60 minutes the USA firmly held their shape and did a good job defensively. They had some good moments in that time. Give France credit for making adjustments at halftime. For the first goal that was on Busio in the midfield not contesting Lacazette (Arsenal over 23 player) and the goalie Schulte who should have done better. France is just the better team and the US Men didn’t deserve to lose 0-3. TS posters always looking for a reason to put down USMNT soccer.
