EDP tiebreaker rules, explain like I am 5 please

EDP tiebreaker rules. Our team was in a two bracket tournament. We tied the first one. Won second one 6-2. Woke up next day and played our third game a full hour before the team that also ended the game with a win and a tie. We win that game. We go watch the other game hoping that the tied team keeps their win below our goal differential. We end up tied on GD as well. So then it moves to goals for. We have 10 to their 9. However EDP has a rule that goals for is limited to 4 per game. So our goals for is recorded as 8 putting us down one to their 9 and putting us in a third place game despite scoring more goals.

Insult to injury we beat the team in that game by 4 goals and the team that took the championship tied that team 1-1.

Proud of the soccer the girls played but it was very difficult to explain this to them.

What is the logic in this rule? Further if this is the rule all games should definitely be played simultaneously.

It’s the EDP Summer Classic, bro. Nobody cares at all. EDP doesn’t even care enough to have real tiebreakers.

Bro, the actual kids care but I forgot this forum is the most unserious space on the internet. I just wanted to understand the logic of the rule for the kids.

It's hot outside. Just give the players ice pops after the game. Offer them to the other team too.

                    Per their website…

                    4. Tiebreakers listed below will be considered in descending order only. Once a tiebreaker fails to determine a result, the next tiebreaker is considered. A previous tiebreaker will no longer factor in any further tiebreaker considerations.

                    A. In the event of a tie between two teams, and two teams only, head-to-head results determine placement. Once there is a tie among three or more teams, head-to-head results will no longer factor in any further tiebreaker considerations.

                    B. In the further event of a tie, goal differential determines placement, with up to plus-4 or minus-4 units awarded per game. If there is a tie among three or more teams on standings points, and then again among some but not all of those teams on goal differential, teams will advance based on a goals differential standings table.

                    C. In the further event of a tie, accumulated goals scored determines placement, with a limit of 4 goals scored per game. If there is a tie among three or more teams on standings points and on goal differential, and then again among some but not all of those teams on goals scored, teams will advance based on a goals scored standings table.

                    D. In the further event of a tie, accumulated goals allowed determines placement. If there is a tie among three or more teams on standings points and on goal differential and on goals scored, and then again among some but not all of those teams on goals allowed, teams will advance based on a goals allowed standings table.

                    E. Finally, teams will conduct a Kicks from the Penalty Mark Shootout. Should a team fail to show up for the scheduled shootout, the tiebreaker will be awarded to the team prepared to participate.

                    i. Each team will designate eleven players to take shots, including one goalkeeper.

ii. As necessary - Shootouts may be assigned to a designated goal/field location, different from where the game was played on, for tournament schedule purposes.

your team tied 2-2, won 6-2 and won 2-1.
Their team tied 2-2, won 4-2, and 3-0.

tie breaker a is head to head. You tied each other. Move on to tiebreaker b. You had plus 5 in the goal differential and they had +5. Move into tie breaker c. Per the rules of the tournament you can get + 4 per game. Max would be 12 for 3 games. Your team only scored 2 goals in 2 of the games while the other team scored 2 and 3 in their other games. Your 6-2 game counts the same as their 4-2 game.

the next tie breakers would have been goals allowed in which your team conceded 5 goals and their team only conceded 4. I personally think goals against should be counted before goals scored.

also the EDP website has the tie breaker scenarios listed and updated on their as the tournament goes on, so you should never be in the dark. For future reference, now you know how every EDP tournament works. It’s a better system than town tournaments that penalize you for winning by more than 6 goals and taking points away from Standings.

The only better system I have seen is some of the better tournaments use the 10 possible points per game. 6 for a win, up to a max of 3 points for a goal scored and 1 for a shutout. 3 points for a draw. Examples: 3-0 win results in 10 points. A 4-1 win results in 9 points. A 2-0 win results in 9 points. A 8-2 win results in 9 points. A 1-0 win results in 8 points. A 2-2 draw results in 5 points. A 0-0 draw results in 4 points.

your games in the 10 possible point tournaments would have resulted with your team having 22 points, the other team would have resulted in 24 points and their wouldn’t have been a tie and less confusion. Their 3-0 win would have earned them 10 points and your 2-1 win only would have earned you 8 points.

Thank you for this breakdown and I understood all of this per my original post. I think this rule seems ok if games are played simultaneously. We went into a game an hour before not knowing what we had to do to get out of the tie except win while the other team knew exactly what they had to do after we played. Like I said these are young kids so it is what it is and they will have their team party and move on but I see this is rule even for the older kids and I think playing simultaneously is much more important at older ages with this rule.

seems like the OP understands it but just doesnt like it was against them. So to the 5 year old, sit down and shut up.

I like this one too. In a 4 team group, if team A beats C&D but loses to team B, and team B ties teams C&D, I think B should move on since they are undefeated and beat team A. In EDP Team A moves on

This has happened to my kid a couple times. While you aren’t wrong that playing simultaneously would help, I do feel like the older the kids get, the more they get used to various tournament rules and wait to see the schedule before celebrating too much. As parents, the best thing you can do is NOT say “if you do ABC, XYZ will happen”. Just say we need to see all the results posted to see who advances.

Sorry that happened. Hope the kids had fun anyway!

Thats pretty stupid. Who cares if undefeated. Thats not a tiebreaker, the team with 2 wins has 6 points and the team with a win and 2 ties has 5. There are a reason wins award 3 points and ties 1.
