    Tryout Process

We've never been through the tryout process before (came in through an ID) and I want to understand what to expect. Child plays for a top team <U12. Do some clubs make offers before tryouts? Are offers typically exploding? Does contract always explicitly state which team if club has multiple teams at an age group? Will we know if other teammates don't receive an offer? How does that work when they have to play the rest of the season?

      1) Yes,
      2) Yes,
      3) Yes,
      4) Yes (parents talk), and
      5) it works the only way it can. You hope your kid made it to/is staying on the team or moving up. If not, you look at your options

It's always a good idea to look around just in case. 12-14 sees lots of changes and some teams fall apart. You don't want to be scrambling at the last minute

Never sign a contract that doesn't specify the team and league. The club will not tell you who is returning. You and your player will have to be sleuths. Parents get really weird around tryout time. Generic conversations about the weather are common. They don't want to show anyone their hand.

What about kids joining up a B team for the Spring season? Are the expected to be safe going forward into next year or do they have to try out all over again?

You will have to try out again. But if they took you for the spring I would think they will keep you on in the fall.

Some clubs tell you that you're welcome back before tryouts. If your player is playing a ton, it should be fine. If they're struggling don't wait to ask the coach what they need to work on )or have your player ask if they're 12+

Do not ever expect to be safe and be realistic in your child's ability. B teams can be used for player development but mostly used to generate money for a club.

If you interested in playing for the "A" team be proactive and get a look before tryouts. You will know where you stand based on your child's level of play. Some club "B" teams are still better than playing town travel but make sure their training is worth it.

                Original question on thread ---

Teams make offers before tryouts if they believe your child is really good. Some will make an offer and some ask to come to tryouts. It's not a bad thing to be asked to go to tryout, its better than a thanks for coming out. Sometimes these rosters are fluid in the spring an players come and go. Your child may be a fringe roster player and they could be asked to join if other players leave or if they are better than someone already on the roster.

Coaches should lay out their expectations and which roster the child will be on. Nothing is ever permanent and there is a chance kids move up and down. Rosters are usually not posted until the summer. You will not know unless you talk to other parents. If you talk to the right parent they will usually tell you what is going on.

Things can get a little strange at the end of the spring season. Parents always handle it in different ways. Some are grateful and move on while others are spiteful and want to make things uncomfortable.
