    Guaranteed playing time?

Do your clubs have any guaranteed playing time? If so, how much?

    #2
No club in their right mind will guarantee PT, especially in writing. They purposely keep contracts vague so there's nothing to hold them to. For younger ages they should give equal PT, then dial into players earning PT in middle school. However PT time still needs to be meaningful. Don't take players if you're going to give them 10 minutes.

I agree with this. I can’t stand when someone takes a kid and then doesn’t play them. Just goes to show that they only took them for the money. Because they will not develop playing five minutes a game. if a player doesn’t add value to the team do not take them simple as that. You’re better off not having a team in that age group, then putting out a cr@p team.

It wasn't a club policy, but D's team coach says he will try to get every player at least a half each game. He's been pretty good about it for the 2+ years D has been on the team.

What club and location are you referring to because that’s a good policy

It's wonderful yet unrealistic for any competitive team.

as a coach, it can be really hard to keep exact track of substitutions. Sometimes when you have your subs waiting to get in, there can be a long period without any stoppage (I have seen up to 10 minutes, but it's not common). There is no way to be 100% sure to get the exact number of minutes in there.

Yep, less pressure to win, so more able to focus on player development.

Exact minutes, no. Approximate minutes yes. And if you are in a league like ECNL/ECRL where subs are limited (eg. no re-entering the game in the half), you can just make a mass sub at the midpoint of each half.

What if a kid makes a team, on pure quality they should play some minutes, but not good enough to be full-time. Kid misses practice, has a bad attitude, has an obnoxious parent screaming all the time.

Does that player still deserve to play?

well if it is a Guarantee, then it has to be exact. And there is no "mid point" in the half. Like said above, subs can, in rare cases, wait long periods of time at mid field waiting for a stoppage.

Guarantee is just asking for trouble. You will have some annoying parent on the side lines with a stop watch

Why does a guarantee need to be exact? You can always give more minutes than the minimum. And yes, there is an approximate midpoint to a half...get the subs ready a few minutes before that midpoint. Over the course of a season, they will get in a little before that midpoint in some games and a little bit after that midpoint in other games.

Even a guarantee can have conditions, like time will be reduced for missing practice without a legitimate excuse, poor attitude, parent behavior, etc.
