Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union are the only true academies. The rest just put “academy” in their name.
Better yet, take up golf.

More multi sport conflicts with practices/games, kids not practicing outside of practice, town program can’t recruit so need to add weaker players as rosters grow. My child was super frustrated bc they wanted to be around like-minded kids. But if our town team had been able to stave off these conflicts/issues, we would have waited until u12/u13. Towns really really struggle in middle school because they don’t have depth and many kids leave sport for a variety of reasons.

I think it depends how serious you kid is about soccer. There are 14 and 15 year olds signing pro contracts, so there is a spectrum on when it makes sense to move a kid from a town travel program to a club. The biggest thing I have seen is the speed of play is difficult for kids coming into the later they progress to the next level, be it town travel (MOSA/NCSA) to an EDP or EDP to an ECNL or MLS Next. On the girls side it seems to be a little more important to move them sooner because the technical skills matter a bit more.
