Are you comparing D1 NCAA soccer with U23 national teams? Agreed completely different on every level but, comparing Rutgers much less St Peter's to a U23 National Team is just stupid. D1 NCAA has over 338 teams with roughly 26 players per team for a total of 8,450 players. Of course it is watered down, take the best 50 NCAA players and have them train together for 6 months and come up with a team of 23 then compete with a U23 National team.

The only reason the USWNT was so far ahead is because the US had the money (aka parents) to fund youth soccer and a college system that gave women a place to play. The rest of the world is starting to invest on the women's side now. Look at Spain women's teams. They are currently the Girls U-17, U-23 and Senior Team World Champs and they just started investing in the women's game about 5-7 years ago! The Spanish Women's team doesn't have the best athletes. Some of their best players didn't even play because of issues with the Spanish FA! BUT, what they all have, is a high soccer IQ and technical ability, that allows them to make good decisions with the ball.

The thing I've notice (since learning to look for it) is that most players are so focused on the ball that they rarely scan the pitch to 1) see where other players are, 2) what space is available to exploit, and 3) where potential passses are. I can't count the times I've watched players recieve the ball with their back to the opponent, then turn to find the opponent on top of them, and lose the ball. And, don't gt me started on their first touch!
