Sophia Smith has played the same way since she was young. Dribbles, head down and shoots a lot. She has built a very successful and lucrative career doing it. Her first touch, passing and decision making are all average at best, but the 1 in 10 times it comes off, she is praised and rewarded. It works in the ECNL, College, and the NWSL bubble. It works vs 90% of the competition. People would have a very different view of some of these players if they played against top level competition most of the time. Instead, we pretend that they do.

Yes as the US plays with the outside backs overlapping the wingers to be involved in the attack. Unless you want to play a 3 back or flat 4 the outside backs need to be fast, be able to pass, and get involved with attacking as well as trucking back on D during transitions. I imagine that is why the US plays more on the left side of the field during counters from the def 3rd. The entire right side was weak with Fox, Demelo, and Rodman.

Are you now comparing the development of players in this country with European countries? If so, then the fact that this group is going for a three peat means nothing to you in comparison to every other country. Tell us when was the last time a European country has won the Women’s World Cup? Still waiting to have someone acknowledge that truth. Sophie Smith has had great training at club, at Stanford and now playing in the NWSL. She has played in a very competitive environment her entire soccer career so far. Anyone take issue with Stanford or how she is playing in the NWSL. If you watched Sophia Smith you would know her strength is to play more central in which she has the speed and quickness to make a run with her first touch. She is not a good winger and Vladko is playing her in the wrong position. USWNT have won 4 WC and going for their third straight. The last European team to win was Germany in 2007. That’s 16 years ago. Keep banging your drum on your mantra ”there is no place to develop players with great potential”.

SPOT ON. The US soccer community in general really need to wake up. These coaches and clubs are focusing so much on winning at the young ages rather than developing quality soccer players with fundementals who understand the game. Sophia Smith is a prime example of what is wrong with the style played in the US. Head down, 1v1 to shot or hospital pass or better yet she gets stuffed after trying to dribble through 2-3 top notch defenders. This type of play is not effective the highest level and it should not be praised at any level.
I am sure many had her as player of the match for the US.
