    Soccer on Turf

Terrible to have soccer played on artificial turf. Should not be allowed. Look at how it affected Rutgers Men tonight. They played on grass all year and Penn decided to play on turf. Definitely affected the result.

It really does hurt the quality of play. The entire fall season for my kid and never once played on grass. Terrible.

The field was not good, unfortunately, that field is just a practice field for multiple Penn sports teams. The main soccer stadium with a grass filed (which is really nice) has been closed for the entire season because of construction. Anyway, it is not ideal but both teams played on the same pitch so you need to adjust.
Also, I watched the game, Rutgers is lucky the game didn’t end like 6:0 or 7:0. It was no contest.

Living in the northeast and not having professional groundskeepers at the youth level, we don’t have much of a choice. I’ll take turf over uneven, dangerous grass where a pass can’t be played without it bouncing all over the place no matter the skill any day.

I agree. My club closes the grass field if it rains to protect what is left of it. All that does is make for 27362 make up games and is still playing through Nov. Now on the flip side if we have to play away and it’s turf- we bomb bc we don’t have any turf by us.

Watching supposedly high level team unable to keep the ball in bounds on turf is plenty for me. It’s ugly.

Its called strategy, Ds HS team has access to both and will switch between the 2 depending on if they need to slow the game down or not.

you will never see a high level game in Europe be played on turf. ONLY GRASS. Should not be allowed for NCAA tourney. That was a joke as it really screwed Rutgers over.

While grass is always preferred it isn't always available. Coaches know that and should prep their teams for anything. Even our HS coach does that, making sure to alternate especially as state playoffs get closer.

Saying they lost because of turf is a cop out. They lost to a better team

Women's World Cup in Canada a few years ago was played on turf. It sucks, but it happens. You need to be prepared.

Artificial grass has come a long way, but it will be a few years yet before it is widely enough used. It is somewhat expensive to install but you get the benefits of low maintenance and a closer replication of grass play. Make sure your kids have proper footwear for turf. Buy AG cleats (hard to find) or FGs that are predominantly round studs. Bladed cleats on turf/AG = injury risk.

Yeah and that was disgraceful. Total sham.

It's an budget decision. Unless you are a professional team it's hard to justify the cost of a grass field in the northeast. Highschools can't afford it travel teams can't afford it. Universities are borderline. At the end of the day a good team can win on either because both teams are playing on the same field. Unless they did a last minute switcharoo your coach should have prepared the team for the surface.

That’s why colleges in the North East are at a disadvantage in recruitment when players given a choice will pick programs with grass training fields as well as grass home field. The wear and tear on their bodies are much greater on turf as well as injury.

Would never ever ever pick a school with an artificial turf playing field. Not worth it! Why risk all the wear and tear and be crippled later in life.
