Why is this a hard concept, just watch professional soccer. It's about decision-making and long balls and playing direct is not a bad thing. If executed correctly, it's an advantage or even a tactical choice for some teams against their opposition's formation/strategy.

When people talk about kick and run- they mean exactly that. Kick the ball to no one or out of bounds and run. Playing direct with long balls perfectly placed is not what anyone means when they say kick and run. You can tell the difference immediately - defender gets ball doesn’t look up and kicks it randomly and forward runs around. This is pretty common in youth soccer around our state.
