I don't understand some of the coaching decisions for a world cup semifinal game. Shouldn't you have your best players out there? When it comes to penalties don't you want the players that scored goals and take penalties in their teams on a regular basis taking penalties? It's not the girls fault I don't think the selection on a strating lineup and penalty takers was the best.

These situations are much more complex than you are making it out to seem. After a long fought game that forces a shootout, the coaching staff must quickly assess who is in the right mental state to take the pressure of the shootout. Did she get hurt during the game? Did she score during the match? Did she miss the game winner? Did she not make the last pass? Is the team in-fighting? When the coach looks into their eyes, do they look confident? etc etc etc No one wants to be the one that misses the penalty that knocks your team out of the world cup. These are young(er) players and are still developing the mental side of the game. Having said all that, the US should have won that game.

Too much politics involved in the selection process. Coaches on the National teams select players from clubs they still work for ahead of better players.

Just saying not considered totally outrageous.

So much politicking and favor trading happens in the background of these selections. It is not going to change any time soon.

Well, I guess the good news is that makes them exactly like every other athletic team, no matter the league, age, location, or sport. There are always going to be a subset of those watching a particular athletic endeavor that feels the wrong players were selected, and they were selected due to favoritism.
