RU is not for everyone including those from NJ. The location is not particularly great especially for instate who know otherwise. The academics are very good but not nationally known like other NJ or tri-state schools.

We are a weird sports state. Both NFL teams are actually NY based. No pro basketball anymore; moved to Brooklyn NY. No pro baseball. The MLS and NWSL teams while practice and play in NJ are NY based too. NHL only NJ team.

Maybe if the State of NJ figured out how to grow keep NJ pro sports teams, it might help embracing NJ college teams too.

Rutgers sports recognize there limitations. That’s why they chose to join the P 5 Conference BIG Ten. They could have stayed Big East and remained competitive in this mid major but for economics as well as there ability to recruit better athletes they knew joining the BIG TEN was/is there best option.

This is one of the worst takes I've seen on here.

Some of the best college programs are in states that have zero professional sports teams like Alabama, Kentucky, Nebraska, South Carolina, Iowa and Mississippi.

Jersey should be rallying around their state school athletics like those states.

Totally. Instead of recognizing that RU WSOC is likely the best sports program in NJ and does a phenomenal job recruiting, the bashing and jealousy kicks in. Jersey should indeed rally around this great program and support with attendance and donations.

Epic fail. The difference is that NJ has those pro teams playing and/or practicing in their state. Not one of the states you mentioned have that.

So fans have no other options in the states you name. In NJ, they do but are not really supporting an NJ team. See the confusion.

Who is going to RU game when they can drive an hr for a Jets or Giants game?

We do support all the RU programs with our very, very high NJ tax dollars. Next...

My kid was recruited to play sports in some of those states. One of the selling features was that stands get packed for games because the neighboring areas have no other pro teams to support so they pack the stadiums for everything.

Being able to keep the best players home is key and RU does that time and time again.

That’s not saying much. What sport are we keeping kids home? Girls soccer? Come on.

One can only wish Basketball and Football recruiting was a tenth as good as WSOC. The other sports talk about building a fence around the Garden State. WSOC actually does it year after year.

Not the op but it isn't just about "not having pro sports" in those states but those big state schools simply have a longer, deeper history with the local college teams. Also many of those listed play in top conferences - AND it's all about football and basketball anyway. Women's teams at those schools don't get much of a showing.

What’s the secret to the womens soccer recruiting that the basketball and football programs can emulate

And how is that working for Rutgers WSOC, mediocre at best.

Let’s be honest here, no kid wants to go to Rutgers unless is from NJ, maybe very small number from Philly or NYC area.
There is only one desirable school in NJ and we all know which school is that.
