Unless you have a good relationship with the coach and are pretty confident they will be supportive then don't say a thing. If you have to miss practice its none of their business why. Just say your kid can't make it. Not a lie but an omission. If they find out (and they definitely may, its a small soccer world) then so be it. Most are pretty sane and know this is how the business operates. If they get pissy about it or worse take it out on your kid, then you know all you need to know.

If you are at a low level club that wants to see a player move on to better, great but this is really rare and even most of those will prove themselves to be terrible when given the chance.

If you are at a competitive club to the new one, you can guarantee some level of retribution or spitefulness.

I guess it depends on the age of the child to some extent.
They're going to find out either way so it's better to be up front about it.

Wait until you have an offer in hand and are going to take it.

But being upfront is also somewhat obnoxious. Like a momager trying to create leverage, or threaten departure by telling current coach. Like, whats the purpose aside from that? Simply attending an ID session doesn't necessarily mean anything. People use them as extra training for their kid, or even just because they need that adrenaline rush of hearing someone heap praise on their kid. If you go & actually think it's a better fit, then approach current coach about it. Until that point it's just pointless, you don't even know if it's a serious option.

I don't think you can be upfront with your current coach. There are very few situations where that coach wouldn't at the very least passively take out the situation on your kid, and at worst your kid starts sitting and being left out. I've heard of coaches state they need to focus on the kids that want to be there and the kids that will be there in the Fall.

To me it's just smart to not tell anyone what you're doing and where. If it gets back to your kid's current coach, then have a ready explanation (no need to lie).

If the current coach can't guarantee that my kid will be asked back for the following season, it makes perfect sense to go to tryouts at other clubs. So I would ask the coach "can you guarantee that my kid will be offered a spot on the team next year?". If the answer is yes, then you can say she's going to the ID clinic just to get touches and practice. If the answer is no, then you can say she doesn't want to be caught with no options in the case she isn't asked back (but also emphasize that she wants to come back).

Of course, none of this should matter if the ID Clinic doesn't happen at a time where she has to skip a practice or game for her current team.

Personally I don't think I would let my kid skip a practice (definitely not a game) with a current team to go to a practice, id clinic, or try out for a different team. The only scenario where I would let them skip a practice would be if there are huge problems on the existing team and they need to get out ASAP or the current team was purposely scheduling extra practices to avoid kids checking out other teams.

Most coaches aren't going to guarantee a spot for any kid the following year, including their current starting group. Anyone can show up to the team at any time, so doubtful any coach worth anything would make that call. I'm sure that there are some coaches that promise the world to get you to stay, but that same coach would most definitely drop a starter for another kid they perceive as better.

Ok, "guarantee" might be too strong. But it's all about probabilities, right? If the coach says "I'm very certain your kid will be back", he's pretty much saying that he doubts that there will be 12 new kids coming the next year that would displace your kid on the roster. If he says "I can't be certain your kid will be back", it probably means he thinks there might be 5-6 new kids that could displace your kid on the roster.
