    Taylor Twellman

Taylor put a picture of an Instagram post on his Twitter today, using it as a point about how the attitudes and demands of U12 club soccer are bad for the growth and future of soccer in the US.

Pretty sure it was a MF 09 post. Keep up the good work guys!

This paragraph made me throw up in my mouth:

……the girls enjoyed some time away before meeting up at the University of North Carolina for a summer camp where several of their parents had the chance to show off their alma mater.

This would be bad if it was only a team or two that were the problem. Reality is Pda,Mfa,Csa,shore are all scams along with tons of others. It’s about money hungry coaches and administrators praying on idiotic parents. You think coaches really care about your kid? They care about your money. The end

That’s sad and hilarious at the same time. A current ESPN analyst and former MLS player calling this group out. Didn’t know who Twellman was and had to look up:

“Twellman is best known for his play with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (MLS) from 2002 to 2009, during which time he scored more goals in MLS than any other player.[1] He was the youngest player to score 100 goals in MLS in 2009 at the age of 29,[2] and is New England's all-time leading goal scorer. Twellman was a five-time MLS all-star and in 2005 was the league MVP.[3]Twellman also earned 30 caps for the United States national team, scoring 6 international goals.

Twellman has been active since his retirement in promoting awareness of concussions and working in the media. He currently works as a color commentator for ESPN/ABC.”

It’s obvious these parents are using this situation to live vicariously thru their kids. Parents making it about themselves by pushing them to hard. Why go to a UNC Camp at that age with Princeton closer? We can argue for pages now but the end result of their actions not will be known in 5 years. Who gets committed to UNC, who has not gotten committed to their top schools, those who move to PDA and those that burnout and quit playing. These are all possible and probable.

I went to the Twitter page and read the IG post in question. I certainly hope this post was not from MatchFit Shore 09s but if it is there are many red flags that stand out to me. While they tried to promote what a great team they have it fell flat in my opinion. No 12 year old should be “battling through injuries”. They are not in the army, they are not pro soccer players. They are children whose bodies have not fully developed. No coach should support children “battling through injuries” so they can play 14 games in 17 days. Is anyone surprised that they are injured? The parents need to be accountable as well. I have a feeling that once the monkey of having to “battle through injuries” and perform is off the backs of some of these kids they might look back and question who really was in their corner advocating for the them. I won’t comment much on the travel because I think parents view this very differently depending on who you talk to.

If I didn’t know better you would think this is a cult for kids. It’s not a good look. It’s not something we, as parents, should be supporting or encouraging. It’s certainly not something a coach should promote or a club. Do better for these kids. Even the pro’s know that this is not the path to success.

I have two kids who played D1 and I had to re-read that Twitter post. I am very sad for these kids because there is no safety net for them. The parents, club and coaches are all complicit in their actions. At some point the train is going to go off the tracks when multiple players will get seriously injured once they hit puberty. It’s a known fact about the likelihood of injuries in girls when they get to that level of maturity. There is no way I would have let my girls play that demanding schedule. One time a coach at my daughters club asked her to play up in the afternoon after playing a match that morning. The answer was simple, no! At some point parents need to take responsibility and act like a grown up.

Seems these parents have gone off the deep end and it does seem like they joined a cult. Very sad.

When a pro publicly shams your post you know you are doing something very very wrong.
