Well you can't get into college or graduate to the next grade unless you fulfill the requirements. So you can't do what you want; unless you home school then there is a little more flexibility...call it a field trip.

That's right. If you miss too many days you simply don't graduate to the next grade---which is pretty terrible. This is true of private and public. Not sure what poster from private said they are okay with traveling for a sport. They are definitely not if it means missing classwork, tests. Private curriculum is extremely rigorous and very easy to fall behind.

What a tool. If your kid has missed that many damn days they can't take 2 then the questions is mute to begin with. We went from taking 2 days to attend a showcase to Susie failed gym. Get a grip people.

Wow a measured/intelligent response. All parents should be keenly aware of graduation requirements but this thread is talking about taking 2 days off for goodness sakes/not the end of the world. With covid schools went months without doing anything of substance. My kids is good but others didn't fare as well without the direct oversight in person provides.

Those in authority didn't care about shutting down education for everone they sure as heck don't care about an indivual kid missing a few days.

Wow, talk about over reaction. Now you have parents saying they will not graduate regarding attendance. A little dramatic? My daughter was upfront and honest with her teachers and explained the showcase situation and how she contacted college coaches who were planning on attending. Teachers were fine with that with the backing of the school athletic director. Let’s calm down with the drama. It may not be okay by you but it was fine by me and that’s all that matters.

The people worried about their kids missing a few days of school are obviously parents who don't know how to raise kids.

Lol all you phuk the system warriors. You do realize the rules are in place because people abuse it, miss too much school and fall behind right? Your kids aren't special and should be taught that sometimes in life there are rules to be followed. And you better check the deets in your school's policy - at some schools teachers don't have to accept work on an unexcused absence

My wife used to work at another district than ours. Families definitely abuse it, then there's also parents who shouldn't even be called parents and don't care got much their kids miss

My privately schooled niece traveled for her sport sometimes out of the country for a few weeks. There were others too (her ad was a former olympian). They missed classwork during the trips. They made up tests. The school was quite supportive. She and her similarly situated friends graduated. She with high honors and is doing great in college having experience in travel and meeting academic obligations.

                    It does happen.

I was the poster that pointed out that you just can't do what you want. You have to keep everyone informed and it is my niece who had the great private school experience traveling with her sport.

Private schools operate differently and that is why some athletes chose that route. The average club player isn't going to miss that much, but its another reason leagues need to schedule around long weekends as much as possible. GDA didn't plus they required an additional rest day so two days of school lost per event.

Sad for your kids but mine have learned more at home than they ever could at school. Is learning for the grade of for the mind?

So many people are reacting to your coda about life and you laugh about it. When you say kids aren’t special is that what you tell your own children when they want to do something and you say they are not special? I can only talk about those daughters that do not abuse being absent from school and are legitimately going to play in a college showcase tournament knowing there are college coaches going to be there to watch her play. I had no problem nor did her teachers or administrators. These schools know which kids will/have abused the attendance rules or being late. I have never heard of a teacher who wouldn’t accept school work from a student because they were absent because they attended a college related event. You do realize that it’s okay to reward your child when they are working hard n the classroom and working hard on the soccer pitch to play in the showcase. Sometimes in life you have to loosen your tie and let it go. That to me is a great life lesson to your daughter. Maybe you can give her a hug too and wish her good luck.

There is nothing wrong with going to a college related event, showcase - that is an excused absence.
The OP was talking about a non college tournament - younger age. That's a different story. IMO by HS it's the decision of the child if they want to miss school for soccer-- they know what they need to do and manage and should be able to make that decision that is best for them. Most of us at that age didn't have our parents super involved. I don't recall seeing any parents at games in HS, it was not common at all. The only time I recall parents attending was at the final game senior year. We are all more involved these days - not sure that is such a good thing.

Everyone is on a travel team. We need to take them to their practices and games.

Years ago, township teams were very good and most were on them. They were the local soccer clubs and most had bake sales, car washes to raise money if there was any real travel involved. Your teammate was your classmate or neighbor. Those were fun days.
