Didn't you just make my point. Faculty don't matter, Media stars matter.

No one cares about Mr Oprah's class.
Einstein's classes were popular too. Real academic seekers want real teachers not pop culture icons.

It's not THAT hard to justify... UCONN is selling a $200k degree, so they're putting millions into advertising, which is what they use athletics for. Now, once you blow a few hundred million dollars on a promotional strategy, letting Randy Edsall run that program seems really stupid, but I'm pretty sure UCONN's admin has made LOTS of stupid decisions, not just that one.

        True.
How large is the market of real academic seekers?
90% of the Academics First families I know couldn’t name one Professor, they seek exclusivity and status.

Sure. Most are going for prestige of Degree.

And as a state school they get a ton of funding state and federally anyway.

The state has consistently cut funding (state finances are a mess), which is part of the reason it's in financial trouble. Because the cost of out of state/private schools is so much higher they've had plenty of in state applicants dying to get it in, but as a state school it has very high instate rates compared to many other states

Most of those "celeb" or prestige professors do a few lectures, special events etc, not really teach and all classes for a entire semester or year after year. Looks flashy, and some of the events get locals from the community to attend so it's good local PR too.

Who is spending $200k on a degree from UConn? No one other than the rich and foreigners who don’t qualify for financial aid pays the sticker price for any college.

It would run you that if you're out of state. Most out of state tuitions at any state school are over 50K. Some are worth that - UVA for example - some less so, like UVM. Financial and merit $ at most state schools is very limited. If you're looking at out of state schools then you should look at private also, where there's bigger endowments and more generous packages. If you target right you could even get a deal from a private that's similar to your in state school

For kids that celebrity gush, I guess it works. Social media in the classroom. This generation is a mess.

Try again. Know a family from MA whose son recently graduated from UConn and they paid less than $40k. They may advertise over $50 for out of state, but no one would come at that price. The average in-state with room and board at UConn is under $30k so who in their right mind would pay $20k+ more? If you are a good student and are ok with a state school, you’ll do a lot better than at a private.
