It’s a bitter pill for all the kids and parents who have spent tons of money on high priced youth soccer it could be the beginning of the end of the crazy expensive national youth leagues. When the carrot of a D1 ride doesn’t exist it will be hard to justify all of the travel and expense that comes with the national leagues.

Tough for colleges to give out sports money when the sports aren’t even being played.

Schools were already under pressure to re evaluate the role and cost of athletics. At many schools athletic departments run in the red (you need big football or basketball with TV to make $). Covid is accelerating it as schools are fighting for survival. Even if athletics doesn't cost a school to much, cutting a few things sends a message to families that academics are the priority.

The only justification anyone needs is if they are having fun learning to thrive in a competitive environment and enjoy spending time together as a family.

You are in the minority with that view point. ECNL advertises and hangs its hat on college placement, the majority of people I know as well as the parents on my kids team have their kids play ecnl because of the exposure it gives them to college coaches. PERIOD. Without that D1 carrot ECNL is a lot less attractive.

Side note....the way you put it "parents have their kids play...." is quite disconcerting. Kids should be playing because they want to, not because their parents have them to.
We don't view this as anything other than another time-consuming, expensive endeavor.
PERIOD.

I'm not in the habit of speaking on other's behalf typically. I'll only answer for ourselves: playing the game to learn to overcome obstacles and succeed in a team environment. It's fun, the travel is fun, the game is fun, having friends from all over is fun. Where that leads, time will tell.
