Not all is lost. While the UAA has somewhat cancelled a full division season it has not yet cancelled all Fall soccer. The attempts to fulfill a UAA season while avoiding plane rides and crowded bus rides is not practical. However, a limited schedule that requires short trips is a possibility.

The Liberty league is also making alterations to allow the players game time, granted in a limited manner. however, they are planning on a later start, which doesn't make too much sense given that the later the season runs the closer you get toward the flu season.....

Personally, regarding HS....I think the kids could play with limited spectators, or at least those respecting mask and social distancing. Avoiding bus rides might be good, but is a potential logistic and legal nightmare....but....do-able even if in a limited season without games after October i.e. no or an abbreviated tournament.

Many NCAA conferences, even for big football (eg PAC 12), already said they're only doing conference games and no playoffs, all to try and limit travel and exposure. Some have games and playoffs over or after Thanksgiving, but most colleges are closing campuses from Thanksgiving until after New Year's. UAA has a lot of travel of a D3 conference but many other conferences don't have nearly as much. Bus travel for soccer can be managed by only taking 18-20 players, wearing masks and spreading them out on the bus. Moving football teams is a multi bus and more costly endeavor

Your math is wrong. Bus travel for soccer, even with spreading out, plus testing is a net negative profit-wise. Football might be multiple buses and a more complicated endeavor, but at least it will pay for itself through TV revenue. Soccer is just a cost with no upside.

Pretend we in a time before Covid-19....was there ever a positive profit margin with college soccer? It isn't as though they are getting large...or any...TV contracts. The stands are not filled on a game by game basis?
For college soccer it isn't really about how much money the school is going to get.

Yep, there will be more men's soccer teams slashed before this is all said and done. Women's teams are in way less danger bc of title IX and the football offset, and because it's the most popular female sport.

No one is playing this fall....and we'll see that within a few weeks. I think it's preposterous, given the risk and statistics for this age group, but it's just a reality with the hype and fear generated and current mindset. Such a tragedy and the fall out, mentally, economically and deaths from other means (suicides, health related b/c no one is getting early detection care) will far outweigh the lives lost to covid.

Schools are slashing athletics. Men’s soccer will be lucky to survive.

So far only two men's teams have been ax'd - it's mostly golf, tennis and the like. Those teams have lower costs (fewer members/travel) but aren't widely followed by students. If a soccer team has a strong record, gets good fan turnout, is well supported ty the campus community they stand a better chance. Intangibles like that can make or break a decision to cut a team. Constantly underperform and no one cares? That's riskier 1-2 years down the road.

Schools were already re-evaluating the role of athletics; Covid has accelerated it. This is just the beginning. Think about this - Stanford cut multiple teams. Top US university that's more financially stable, a massive endowment plus the prestige of several olympic medal athletes and they cut teams. What does that mean for sports at a smaller school with less financial stability like a Marist or Duquesne or UNC Ashville?

One way around it is to cut scholarships - starting with football. Cut the # of football scholarships then that goes straight to cutting women's scholarships or even teams. Just because you are allowed X number doesn't mean you have to give that many. You are right women's soccer is safe because it's an easy way to help satisfy Title 9.

When it comes to sports, most internationals are on scholarships....when it comes to NARPs (non athletic regular students), most of them are FULL payors. They are the wealthy foreign families (many asian and Indian) who want their children to have the American dream, many on the med school track. The schools cannot afford to lose those students because they pay full boat and subsidize a lot of Americans actually. That is the big debate right now with the immigration law that requires a foreign student here on a student visa cannot be taking all online classes--in our Pre-Covid world, this made sense because the intent was not to let foreigners come over on 'student' visas, take a couple of online classes and not really be here for the main purpose of that. Now, with traditional universities going all online, this rule becomes a problem because it's not their fault schools are going online exclusively in some cases. I imagine it will be changed.

As for the point someone made about Men's Soccer getting cut...they are in great danger because of Title IX. It's the reason that many huge football schools don't have men's soccer:

It's why, tragically, many schools don't have Men's Soccer and the reason so many programs have been cut over the last decade. There are around 130 more women's programs than men's believe it or not. There will be more cut before this is all over, guaranteed. It's all so sad.

Hopefully that push by Trump is halted. I agree prior the rule made sense but these are exceptional times that hopefully will be temporary.

If more men's soccer teams get cut I don't think it will be this year but next year could get very ugly. As you said there's a reason there's 100+ fewer men's D1 teams vs women's - it's all about Title Nine numbers.
