UConn eliminating 4 sports, cutting scholarships

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si....ts-coronavirus

UConn cutting $10 million in athletic subsidies by eliminating 4 sports; cutting Athletic Dept pay by 15%; and cutting some scholarships. Sadly, as colleges start to see actual registration #’s and realize how much $ they are losing, you’ll see this more and more this summer.

UCONN is honoring athletic scholarships for the sports that are cut. Other schools are doing the same. They are also keeping the sports for another year so athletes have time to figure out what they want to do. Some of the other schools aren't giving impacted athletes time. It is unfortunate and you can't help but feel for kids who have worked hard much of their lives to get there. Yet at the same time schools are under enormous pressure to save money. UCONN is practically broke. The fact that so many schools are feeling the same pressures should help keep faculty in place for now. If quality faculty start leaving for other schools and impacting the academic component, then those schools will spiral downward.

The role of sports teams at some schools was already being questioned. Covid just amplified it. as many of the teams being cut also happen t be tams that are our strong Olympics programs there are concerns the nation may lose its competitive advantages (men's swimming and diving for example).

This was the most updated tracking list of teams eliminated, well over 100. Thirty six D1 teams so far, 54 D2, 31 D3.

I was going to say the teams might just use the response by Brown's track & field team to get reinstated, but judging by the sports involved and the faces in that photo, charges of "RACISM!!!" won't work.

yeah, rowing, golf, tennis etc aren't typically very "diverse"

That shows the proportional nature of Title 9. Probably ~50 on the 3 men’s sports means ~50 women’s spots need to be cut.

While Covid is what’s pushing colleges over the cliff, they’ve been marching toward it a long time. Too few students in general and fewer still that can pay full cost. And for state schools like UConn, state subsidies only go down either by outright cuts or decade-long freezes despite rising costs.

Good point on proportionality. As Title IX is focused on "Opportunities"
The # of slots and the # of scholarships need to balance.
My guess is it was 8-10 scholarships cut each for W & M.

With all the money UCONN collects for basketball - they are broke?? Make it make sense!

They misfired on leaving the Big East years ago and have a big entry fee to leave their current conference and re-join the Big East. Men's hoops hasn't been good in several years (not even making the NIT). That's not going to subsidize an entire athletic program.

UConn basketball isn't Alabama or Clemson football. You don't need an MBA to figure this out.

The women are incredibly successful, but TV contracts are not bound by Title IX to pay the same. Ratings aren't close to men's March Madness, and therefore neither is the money.
Q&A on Uconn web site talks about revenue from football being $3.7M https://uconnhuskies.com/news/2020/6...athletics.aspx

The athletic department has bled emoney for years. So is the school. Cutting a few less popular sports is as much about saving a few dollars as it is sending a message they are being fiscally prudent

                              That’s uncalled for. Grow up.
