If HS doesn’t play then clubs will be chock full o players looking for time. Clubs will make it happen because they have a financial interest, the state will prevent HS sports because Baker and his crew have zero backbone.

Last time i checked the teachers, coaches, administrators, etc aren’t high school age. It’s not just about the students. If the teachers union says they won’t teach them no school.

Agreed. There are so many options to protect adults in the school system that feel vulnerable.
Continuing to suppress learning for all students shouldn’t be one of them

You have never been to a track meet if you think its a social distanced sport....just the opposite in fact. People going all out....huddled to start- trying to win....passing each other as someone is huffing and puffing, lol.

Maybe the union should find other work in the school system for the teachers that are unable or willing to come back in a traditional role. Offer some boring admin work that can be done remotely and fill their position with a full time sub.. bet the teacher reconsiders his/her stance

Well, track and cross country are different “sports”. You could eliminate team huddles, stagger start times, Limit number of participants... there are things you can do if you really want to be creative. MIAA won’t, clubs will.

Over 500,000 teachers and admin have been laid off already and it is just the beginning.
Closing the country was good for our health but will have huge economical impact... state/cities/town have no money and will have to cut their budget massively (first estimate is around 20%).

Nine times out of ten subs are awful, essentially babysitters. There's a reason they're subs and not full time teachers. Certain subjects are difficult to find a teacher with expertise in that subject matter. I'd rather my kids be taught on line by (most) of their teachers than a bevy of subs.

* I say most because while many teachers have done a solid job the last few months, a few have not. Not surprisingly they tend to be teachers that aren't great in the classroom either. Covid has resulted in a suspension of teacher reviews this year which means another year of these teachers still on the job. Then the union will protect them too. Anyway, an issue for another day.

Surveys have shown up to 20% of teachers won't come back to the classroom. That means more opportunities for young and eager teachers. Plus they would have far fewer health risks. That said, yes school budgets are going to hacked to pieces because state revenues are so far down. Our town already nixed a much needed building improvement project at the high school.

Or, as some states seem to be at least exploring, is they switch a few sports around spring vs fall

We don't necessarily need subs. We have so many more options beyond all open or all closed. The same technologies that were used this spring for Remote Learning, could still be used to support a variety of hybrid engagement options. Many students and teachers may actually feel safer in school while others may feel better at home. The tools are there to include everyone and accommodate the needs of each family.

You could very easily have kids in the classroom and a vulnerable teacher do a zoom from home. There are plenty of ways to do this. Maybe it takes some creativity but if all of us healthcare professionals could immediately pivot to a new model to get our patients “seen” teachers and schools should be able to do the same. We literally were forced to learn an entirely new healthcare delivery model in a few days.

I 100% agree with you. This shouldn’t be that difficult to implement.
