NCAA grants Spring sports extra yr eligibility

    https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/202...igibility.html

NCAA granted extra year of eligibility to spring sports, but not winter sports like basketball and hockey that ended early.

If this pandemic last in the fall or comes back in a second wave, soccer eligibility will likely be extended too. A lot of competition for those 2021 slots.

Shame. NCAA lost $$$ in hockey too. Will the schools get some of that stimulus for sports revenue losses?

I understand the gesture, but how many students are going to stay an extra year just to play a sport longer - and even more so if they are paying any meaningful dollars to do so?

Then the NCAA should technically give the 2021s an extra year of eligibility too. And then on down the line. It seemed nice of them at first but this just hurts every successive year instead of just this year’s seniors. It does no help to pass the buck.

My guess right now is a lot. Kids coming out of undergrad right now in the worst recession in history have no jobs. A lot of them are probably applying to graduate school for next year so they can at least get another degree out of the way and have something to do until the economy comes back.

Why? News flash, but you are always competing for a roster spot unless you are a stud at a P5 with a scholarship locked in. It’s not like a 2021 gets recruited and then is secure all 4 years. The next class behind; transfers; grad students with eligibility, anybody can come and take their spot. Same for these players with eligibility extension; it’s not a gimme they’ll be playing next year unless they have the skills to earn a spot.

Yeah, spend more money you don't have and take on more debt. Always a great idea. You go to grad school because it's your career path, your passion, not because you don't know what to do next.

Yes, big mistake trying to kick the problem down the road. It always comes back to bite you.

No, not kidding. You go work at McDonalds, the smart ones will move forward with their education. Look at past recessions, this is usually what happens.

Of course. I was showing the doubters that even under these dire circumstances, places are still hiring. America will bounce back.
