    Playing college soccer

When going on an official visit and meeting with the HC, is it okay to ask about playing time? Also, are there any questions my daughter should not ask aside from scholarship money? Lastly, if the coach is a new HC at a D1 program, how long are typical coaching contracts?

Isn’t the official visit to get an offer, if all goes well? If they’re flying you out for an official visit, they are very interested.

I would not ask about playing time. This is not high school or club. Playing time is generally done by who are the best players. The only time it’s probably appropriate is to ask if your daughter is a goalie in how do they use goalies - Do they rotate them or do they split halves.

Regarding the coaching contracts - 3 to 5 years

If you’re going on an official now, there might not be money left, or very little. You can ask how they see you fitting into their program. If you’re one of the coaches new recruits of his/her program that’s a good sign they value your talent to turn around a program.

Even if you ask, you're asking a person you don't know to be truthful. Many coaches are like used car salesmen so take any response for what it's worth - not much. The player/family needs to do their research on who plays the most, watch game footage etc. If you're nervous about PT there's probably a reason for it. More importantly getting an offer this late, especially if there's little to no more money means the coach doesn't see you as a high impact player.

Is the coach younger and ambitious? They may be looking to move up the ladder soon. Is the contract nearing the end? What's their record (needless to say a poor record means they may be leaving soon). Two coaches we spoke with had family ties in the area and another had a spouse working at the university. That means they're probably less likely to leave any time soon.

You should seriously ask yourself and your player if playing D1 is worth it if you're likely not going to a) get much athletic aid, if any and b) not going to see the field much, if at all your freshman year. I think parents are often delusional. I've seen this with your soccer where parents honestly believe, if my kid only makes the "A" team then we're set. They are the last kid picked and their playing time is minimal. If a college coach benches you most your freshman year, this isn't going to change much sophomore year because of the freshmen impact players they bring in. The only exception to this rule are keepers.

If playing time is important to your daughter, then consider going D2, D3, or NAIA. It's been said before but if you're committing this late in the season on a D1 squad, you're filling out a school's roster. You're not going to be looked at the same as the committed impact players they brought on last year.

If you're asking such questions on this website, you're basically ****ed.

This wreaks of troll. Want to know about PT, go look at their game log for the past 5 years .... all online and free. If you have to ask about scholarship money, chances are, your kid is not in line for it. As for coaching contracts, nothing is written in stone. They vary from very short to very long depending on performance and staying out of trouble. Ask the past 2 Yale coaches.

2021. Going on an official visit later this month. It's her first one and only serious interest she's gotten this far. It's with a D1 program with a new coach that was just hired on and watched her play recently after reaching out.

First, congratulations on the OV because it’s an important step. You need to let your daughter do the talking and give space so the coach and potential teammates can get to know her and vice versa. It’s not the time to act stupid or immature. Directly asking about playing time isn’t a good idea, but telling the coach she is hoping for an opportunity to help the team or asking what role the coach sees her playing are better ways to ask this indirectly. The coach’s response will give her a good idea. It’s very important that she accepts any invitations to hang out with her potential teammates and treats the team captains with deference. Good luck!

It is a new coach. Who knows strategy. I would ask about PT. It makes them give you insight into where they see your role. But the player needs to be realistic too.
If there are other schools in the mix, you can assess accordingly.
But beware, coaches lie. New coach, no baseline to be able to tell.
