As you can see most of the NESCACS are not truly top tier academic choices. There are at least 18 colleges currently ranked higher than the best of them. The reality is the kid who has the grades to get into Williams might not have the grades to get into MIT, Harvard, Yale or even Duke. Granted there are no actual bad choice once you get to that sort of list but choosing Williams over Harvard so your kid can play soccer? Not sure a whole lot people will do that. Not even sure many would even pick MIT over Harvard or Yale for that reason. The reality is once you start getting below that top tier academic level there are a lot more choices than just D3 schools IF academics truly are the priority.
    So, so wrong.

The top 4 or 5 NESCAC colleges are among the very best colleges in this country. All depends upon which list you use and the the criteria evaluated

Williams is a particularly poor example to make your point. Kids regularly choose Williams over Harvard, even without sports as a consideration. (My cousin did so.)

I recall someone posted the Duke list and it was not that impressive. It was particularly lacking in grad school placement.

For your cousin, was net price a decision factor?

          Found the post:

Since a certain poster likes to make fun of Tufts, I thought it would be fun to take a look at Tufts' all-conference women from 2005-2009 to see what they are doing now. (I thought 10 years out would be a good measure.) There were 8 different all-conference honorees over those years. Brief info on each follows (LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google info):

          NYU M.D., now at Childrens
Physical Therapist trained at MGH, now at Georgetown
MS Tufts in STEM education, currently working on Ph.D. at UMass Lowell
M.A. BU School of Medicine in mental health counseling
          MSW NYU, LMSW
DPT at GW, now at Childrens
          JD Berkley, teaching UCLA Law
MS MIT in systems design, high tech consulting

Overall, a very impressive group. One big takeaway, clearly the soccer did not prevent them from pursuing graduate school.

Difficult to say, as I do not know all the details of the family's financial situation.

Here is a post I located about Duke:

"Maybe not. I looked at 2011 as a sample year. 6 Duke women were named all ACC.

              playing pro in Finland
              Financial adviser for JP Morgan
              Structural engineer
              High tech sales
              Physical Therapist
              unable to locate one

overall, pretty good I would say."

And here is the post about MIT

"For fun, I took a look at the MIT players who won first or second team NEWMAC recognition to see what happened to them. Going backwards, the available data was not great for classes 2014 to present as many of them were still finishing school. So, I looked at the 5 year period from 2009-2013. During that period, MIT had 11 women named to the first or second all NEWMAC team. The following is a brief summary of each:

BS in Mechanical Engineering working as a product developer for a startup

                Wall Street (Goldman)

Wall Street then to a startup

MS in computer science now a product manager at Uber

Masters in Mech Eng working at a startup

Wall Street, now getting an MBA at Wharton

BS in Aerospace Eng, Masters at USC in Systems architecture, getting MBA at Sloan, while still an employee of a top company

                Mechanical design engineer at Tesla

U Mich med school now a surgeon

Masters in Mechanical Eng, product design engineer, with a number of patents

                Software Developer"

Yep, BTNT, D1 are better schools, with more brilliant kids, far superior athletes (in many cases I agree here), tougher, almost concentration-camp like conditions and challenges, etc. etc. It's a job, a job, a job....but a job you better all of your heart in lest you be eaten alive. These D1 athletes are the most impressive human beings on the planet. And if you attended a D3 you are a LOSER no matter what your career outcome says.

How many athletes from Hopkins and Wash U do you reckon have gone to med school?

How many Silicon Valley millionaires came out of Stanford soccer. Quality of life for the families of doctors and lawyers is generally low.

4 Women graduated from the 2011 Duke team. One when to Duke B school and is an associate director for an major ecommerce company, another is a Pediatrician, a third is a VP at another major ecommerce company. Couldn't find the fourth. I think most would consider those to be pretty fair outcomes.

                              Response

I think that a lot of colleges under the D1 level fill in there roster with walk on's that while not on scholorship, have a opportunity to gain meaningful playing time by showing the staff what they can do. In our situation, there were 8 walk on's within a class of 12 freshman. Some of these carried all state or at a minimum all league recognition. By the end of the freshman year, 6 were gone (only 1 started and played in about 1/3 of the games)and 2 remained. Eventually only 1 went all the way through and had some meaningful minutes. The 4 scholarship athletes made a difference in all 4 years. In the end, my thoughts were that many of the 8 were there as practice add ons with a chance to prove themselves. Given that mindset going in, it wasn't a bad chance at holding onto a spot.

Come on -MCLA plays in the MASCAC, not even close to NEWMAC. That said, I'd question a MCLA v. Emerson or MCLA v. Springfield post-graduation - employment contest. With Springfield's hyper-specialization on sports mgmt./training/etc. and Emerson's focus on comms/pr/media-film, etc. who knows all graduates could be telemarketing before the cyborgs and their learning Ai computers take over the industry.
