Interesting thing about soccer is that with all the practice of give and goes, careful pointed crosses, and the set plays, most games are won with a ‘fluke’ ‘what the f—-‘ goal. Although it is evident that the more possession the better the chance of having that ‘fluke’ goal....or even a real one, the game can just as quickly be won by the inferior team on a counter, a fluke, or even a good play.
This is the reality that I dislike about the game and find it no where else in sports. When you watch/listen to an EPL game, the excitement is in response to good passes and defensive moves. Since the goals are few and far between, the spectator has adapted. Otherwise, it might be the most boring game in the world.

I wouldn’t say “most games” but it does happen. Here, the “fluke goal” was the result of a good hustle play by the team that had played modestly better. So not really a “fluke.” But had it happened in Wellesley’s favor, folks would be on here crowing about about the superiority of the BSL. In truth, neither team dominated the entire game and it was a scrappy physical game without many sustained period of possession ( other than Ludlow a bit early). But Ludlow got the goal when it counted, even if it wasn’t a pretty one. That’s why they are champs.

To be fair Wellesley does not often make deep runs in the playoffs and this year was the farthest they've gone in D1 in school history. None of the kids on this year's team had had much success in the past, so to make it to state finals and remain competitive is impressive. Let's not forget they dominated Lincoln-Sudbury in the semis.

Ludlow, at the end of the day, was simply more aggressive in the offensive third and created more chances.

Right!!! Because this would never happen in a DA game!!!! Such BS!!! My son played DA and this happened just as much there as elsewhere. In fact, they were being completely dominated by one of the best teams in the country, but the defense held and the offense, during their 1-2% possession of the ball scored on a fluke. Stupid plays and mistakes have frequently in the DA.....I will give it credit, however, they might happen at a quicker pace.

You can't really hold it against Wellesley for losing in the state final when Nauset doesn't have a real state final. And Ludlow isn't in our ranking system. That's if you're telling me Wellesley should be #1.

Nauset has convincing wins against Somerville and New Bedford. The 3-0 win against Arlington also looks impressive when you consider, Arlington beat North Andover and Masconomet, 2 top 15 teams and have two one goal losses to Lexington, who was formerly #1.

Although, Wellesley started out 2-3-2, which you have to consider into the rankings, they also ran off 13 in a row, before the Ludlow game against teams like, Needham, Newton North, BC High, Lincoln-Sudbury, BC High, Silver Lake, Brookline and Natick.

You can really make an argument for either team. Even if Wellesley is more deserving, because of a very tough schedule, how many times would they win if the 2 teams played out of 10 games?

This post is actually pretty accurate about a lot of sports. As the philosopher once said, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

In high school soccer, the real equalizer is the free substitution rule. You can have a few solid club level players, surround them with athletes from other sports like lacrosse, and have a puncher's chance against teams who may be better than you. A lot of goals are scored from mistakes and random bounces, more so than in the professional game. That is why fitness and physical strength tips the scales in high school soccer. Run like crazy, sub out when tired, rinse and repeat.

There still are very good players in high school soccer, and some teams like Lexington try to "play it right", but at the end of the day you can get knocked out in the playoffs on PK's or a fluke goal.

Wow, That was well-stated and a perfect summary of the game. The game was not pretty but hats off to both teams. BTW Longmeadow was the 2nd best team in the state.
