......and this is because he is also a math teacher? I am not doubting that the team could have been coached differently....I just want you to explain why being a math teacher means you can’t coach soccer

To the OP's point, SL could probably do with better coaching.

DB from Needham was too. Seemed to work out for him and the Rockets over the years.

It's an interesting point. How many of the successful high school soccer coaches are career coaches either for club teams and/or college teams. Not judging either way, you can draw your own conclusions as to how that affects training, strategy, formations, style of play.

DB is a legend....and by report, a great math teacher as well.

I waited for a bit to give the spoiler but if you watched the EB vs Somerville game, EB won it on a penalty shot with a handball inside the ball, technically hit his arm. Is that something a ref should let go or is a hand ball a hand ball and still a penalty, even at that stage of the game and the tournament? It wasn't really a potential scoring threat. Can the ref award a team with a kick outside of the box in that situation?

There is objectivity and some subjectivity to this.
If, in anyway, you move your arm into the path of the ball then it is a hand-ball. If the arm is stable and the ball hits it then it is not a hand-ball.

An interesting scenario is the falling player who is using their lower/down arm to brace the fall. If the ball hits that arm then it is not a hand-ball...unless the referee feels that the fall and arm movement was purposeful and meant to be in the path of the ball.....which only a goalie is allowed to do. For that same falling player, if the upper arm hits the ball then it is a hand-ball.

If the penalty occurs inside the box then it is a penalty kick. Unless, the ‘hand-ball’ is the result of a ground pass from defender to goalie and the goalie picks it up. Then it is an indirect kick...but still within the box.

I never made the comment about him being a math teacher... who gives a bleep... he’s not a good coach and has benefited from talent teams and a usually weak league. Simply does not adjust to anything the other team does in games against better teams.

Dracut/Wayland the other night ended this way. Ball hit arm close to body and arm not moving. Ball went straight down, kid shot it and scored. Bit of discussion between center ref and assistant, but video indicates he got it right.

Over time I actually think the high schools are getting more qualified head coaches, as they've dipped into the club ranks in many places (Wellesley and Hopkinton girls come to mind). Sooner or later the old guard will become extinct like they have in other sports.

The bigger problem are the sub varsity levels; the schools get who they can get. Not a lot of coaching skill and a lot of turnover. Rarely do you find a diamond in the rough coaching at the jv or freshman ranks.

Interesting. I'll have to go back and watch the replay, but it looked like his arm may have been moving a bit. Thanks for sharing this.

Holliston beat Norton earlier today 1-0
St. Mary's down 1-0 at the half, has a 2-1 lead on Mystic Valley in the 2nd half.

Final 4 D-1 teams were ranked 7-8-10-NR in my poll, where 1-3-4-5-6 were all knocked out before that. Lexington, Somerville, Silver Lake, Newton N and Needham.

However, Lincoln-Sudbury wasn't that far behind and had them ranked in the Top 3 at one point. Wellesley started off slow and caught fire at the end of the season, where they were just as good as any of the top teams.

St. Mary's up 2-1 on Mystic Valley with a few minutes left. Game reportedly getting chippy.

                                St. Mary's holds on 2-1.
