SJP always seems to just reload. Having said that, last year's class was special and very nearly won states while suffering only one loss. It put 6 players on college rosters this fall. Returning are 4 seniors who played a lot and are proven. The GK performed well in last years playoff run. I look for this team to get better as the season goes on and the new starters gain experience.

Funny, that’s pretty much what my son told me, count that +1!

I know of new player who is going to raise some eyebrows this season at prep. Not my son by the way.

Not sure about other schools....but, SJP is a tough experience. They had about 70 freshmen try out for soccer this year. Someone told me that last year it was almost 80 and they cut that down to 25. This year half of those 80 freshman players who made the 25 player freshman team last year were cut trying to make it to JV.

Junior year is tough too...kids make it to the freshman team and then the JV team and get cut trying to make Varsity. Juniors aren't allowed to play JV..so their soccer career is basically over.

The Varsity try out was five 2.5 hour tryouts and three scrimmages against other towns. Almost all the kids that play are club players. A lot of kids apply thinking they are going to play at SJP and its devastating when they get cut.

I think there were almost 60 kids trying out for Varsity (Freshmen aren't allowed)...20 sophmores were cut after the first 2.5 hour tryout.

With that said...the Varsity team lost half their players to graduation. Not sure if they will make it as far as last year...too early to tell.

Just out of curiosity...what are tryout processes like at other D1 schools?

70 freshmen trying out is a lot. I've heard a large turnout is about 50, but usually less.

My sympathies as well. These cuts hurt parents as much or more than they hurt the boys. Tough to learn at age 13 that many are called but few are chosen. Sports specialization has accelerated this reality--especially in the demographic that $JP and the like draw from.
And while athletics isn't everything, it is something to take into account for the HS experience.
These schools like to say they "offer engaging extra-curriculars" for everyone, but that is usually a bit of a stretch when you consider participation levels. Many kids at the big catholic conference schools who do not play a sport have ZERO non-academic engagement. By the time they are late sophomores and juniors they realize they need some resume padding, and then the non-athletic extra-curriculars get some traction...and the sting of "not being good enough" begins to fade.

I hope you know that you go through life as a jumbo-sized dbag. And, no...my kid didn't get cut.

It's high school soccer. My son would have breezed onto the varsity team at his D1 high school as a freshman. At this point he'd probably be the Gatorade POY if he went back to high school.

So your son plays academy soccer? A kid decided to switch from the Revs and try out for varsity at my sons school...he was pushed down to JV. Keep dreaming.

So where did the Braintree coach end up, they made a change this year? Did his sideline behavior (not acceptable at any level) have anything to do with it?

At what level of interest is a 4th team needed? Seems like SJP could do it, provided the team raises funds/pays registration.

                          Here’s how Brookline does it.

                          Day 1 - 2 hr with Fitness
                          Day 2 - 2 hr with Fitness
                          - 2 hr
Day 3 - Scrimmage, team selected.

Typical suburb parents. Coach yells and didn't play their son enough and they run him out of town. Get ready for a big step back.

You’ll see his name on the D1 commit list soon enough. Enjoy high school. Glad he was old enough to escape the recruiting rules change.

Braintree is famous for this. They tried to run the girl’s basketball coach out of town but she was too good for the crazy parents to be able to pull it off. The boys soccer coach had no cred.
