Meanwhile a coach has another player he likes that did get in ED or EA so will give the spot to them, not the athlete that still isn't admitted yet.
So is this whole list a sham then? What percentage of the kids listed here will actually make a team?

Not at this point most kids know if they're in or not, some still of wait lists. That's why the D3 list is much shorter earlier in the year then grows tremendously in the spring.

BTW D1 athletes are also told the apply EA or ED and also can get rejected. If you think your kid is a risky admit keep their options open in case something falls through. Unfortunately late in the game D3 will be your best bet, maybe some lower level D1s or the rare spot where another player changed their mind and the coach is scrambling. Don't burn bridges with programs you've been talking to, even after you're all done. You may been them next year if you realized it was a poor decision.

My son was an uncertain admit for a D3. Coach made it clear (and general admissions stats seemed to back this up) that going ED improved admission chances. Son is thrilled to have gotten in since it was clear first choice over other places that recruited him. Maybe he gets in on his own or with just coach putting him on list. We'll never know but benefit has been no college worries since before Christmas.

This is nonsense, of course, as a quick perusal of the commitment list will make clear.

Even if you aren't a soccer player, you improve your chances for admission by going ED.

No, it's not a sham. Coaches generally aren't in the business of recruiting players who can't get into their schools, and they're generally pretty good at projecting who will make the grade.

With that said, they're not perfect, and admissions decisions by some schools are more unpredictable than at others. So there will be a few surprises, and there will be some kids who change their minds for other reasons.

Not always it can really vary by school. There's fewer ED spots and typically you're in a pool of highly qualified applicants. Some schools that reject you ED won't put you in the regular pool.

One can easily find the statistics for ED for each school. Every school I have ever looked at (which is not to say every school out there) has had a dramatically higher admit rate for ED. It is not clear to me that you would be competing with more impressive applicants -- why? -- I would guess kids for whom a school is a reach would use the ED bump, not kids for whom it is a safety (those latter kids are going to be the most impressive). Colorado College has an ED admit rate of about 30% and a regular decision admit rate of only 5%. But that may be extreme.

Not the op but it is true that at some schools you're better off applying regular or EA, mostly because they do a very small ED pool. My preference is EA so that you're not legally bound. You still are demonstrating strong interest in the school and the decision comes usually by the the holidays.

This is true at most schools. Of the admits in regular, even more come from the ED applicants. Most kids don’t apply ED unless they really want to go and have a good chance of getting in.

That is why BC suck. He goes after players from his club and not the best players in the state

To win the ACC you need better players than MA produces. You need to recruit nationally/internationally. He does grab a few local players, but they are rarely impact players.

Womens' side has the same issue. ACC competition with local talent won't win you championships
