Agree. I know someone that plays for Amherst college. The pressures are intense. He says it's similar to top D1 except that in the spring season there is a lot less soccer.

As an aside, I'm thinking of sending my kid to prep school next year. There's a good write up on that on Jan 9th "Prep Schools: Academics First" in that NESJ link.

D3 in season is very intense. Off season it's much better but you're still expected to train with your team, practices, scrimmages etc just not at the same pace as in the fall. Most kids who make it onto a college squad are pretty committed to the game and want to do well. You definitely can't take your foot off the gas in college or you won't last on a roster long.

Don't know if you are serious, but if you can afford it I'd highly recommend it. The academic quality varies, obviously, as does the soccer piece. But it has been a great experience so far for our family. There is a lot of college coach exposure; Several D1 coaches are at regular games, and Black Rock is an option for some, which is also high level soccer.

re: Black Rock -there's also GPS, NEFC and if you can get a waiver Revs, Bolts and Seacoast. Best bet is DA if you can get a waiver.

Please think about this for a second. Why the hell would anyone in their right mind spend $70+K for an education and then allow their kid to participate in this sort of lunacy? Why are your kids going to Tufts, to play soccer or get an education? If you wanted a D1 lifestyle then go D1 and at least let them pay you for abusing your kid and compromising their education.

What lunacy? The appeal of D3 is that you can do both academics and athletics at a high level. In D3, you can miss a training to attend a lab. In D1, there are some majors you just can't do at certain institutions.

Why do you think it is either/or? Some kids can thrive in this situation. Many can't. That's why it's so important to get the right fit. But please, some kids absolutely can do both academics and sports.

Wasn’t the op posting that the intensity in top level D3 was akin to that found in D1. If that’s true that’s pretty sad because the allure is supposed to be that academics come before athletics which is why there are no scholarships at the level. If they are working the players at near D1 intensity levels and the parents are footing the bill for that then it seems like the kids are getting shortchanged.

Top D3 programs make allowances for academic activities that most D1 programs (including some Ivies) do not. Travel is typically much less in D3 than in D1, and the off-season commitments are generally MUCH more relaxed in D3 than D1. D3 players train and compete with passion and intensity, but are typically able to maximize their academic opportunities (including spring semester of junior year abroad) in ways that most D1 players cannot.
