We as parents and our son asked these same questions and it turned out a D1 soccer school was a good fit, despite the fact that he may or may not see the field much or at all.

On your question 1, our son had a lot of interest from D3 NESCAC and other schools but it turned out he didn't quite have the grades to get into those schools and even if a coach could possibly help get him in, we feared he'd be in over his head academically especially while keeping up a rigorous athletic program schedule. Using D3 soccer to get into a better college is not the right path for every good player.

Question 2: There was very little to no athletic scholarship money being dangled in front of him, so that wasn't really a factor for us. And yes, that's the case for many D1 & D2 soccer athletes because there just isn't much athletic scholarship money available in this sport on the boys side and most freshmen will have to earn playing time; it isn't handed to them. (I know for a fact that some of the kids on the D1 verbal commit list did get athletic money but I would be willing to bet my house that most did not)

Questions 3 & 4: Our son has always wanted to TRY to play at a good D1 college program, knowing it may or may not work out but he's driven to give it his best shot. He's fortunate enough to have the opportunity to chase his dream. As parents, we don't particularly care what level of soccer he plays; we just know that it makes him happy and it benefits him in so many ways, much more than athletics. We support 100% his love of playing the game and chasing his dreams, as I would bet most parents reading this do for their own kids.

Question 5: He and we are well aware, given the statistics, that his goal of actually PLAYING D1 soccer may not become a reality. But he's driven to TRY. He knows that if you don't try, you can never succeed. If it doesn't work out then at least he tried and will not have regrets - and there's no question that he will always love the game regardless. He could then choose to transfer to a D2 or D3 where he might have a better chance of more playing time or he could be so content at the D1 college that he decides to stay regardless of his status on the soccer team. As evidenced by these threads over the years, a lot of kids will find themselves in this situation after freshman year. We are well aware of this reality.

Question 6: In his case, the school happens to be a good academic fit, as does the D1 soccer program for which he was actively recruited. Does he have other college options? Yes - D1, D2, and D3 and colleges where he knows he would have to play club soccer are all options available to him but he has decided to chase his D1 dream while getting a solid college education and we support him.

I don't think our situation is unique. A lot of people fault kids and families for choosing D1 over D3 simply because they most likely won't ever play much or at all, but it's a complicated decision-making process for each kid and family and all factors must be considered carefully.

Congratulations to all of the players on these lists!
Do you mind sharing the timing of his commitment? If he was actively recruited, was that spring junior year?

My son had been sending emails to coaches at schools he was interested in, starting spring of sophomore year. Some of the local coaches replied thanking him for his interest and asking for a schedule of where he would be playing so they could check him out; some mentioned they had seen him play and would continue keeping an eye on him. Others, mainly those outside of the New England area, never replied or just sent generic ID camp brochure type of replies. It is helpful for your son to send these emails to get on a coaches radar early and to get on their email distribution list for ID camps and invite-only recruitment training sessions moving forward.

Coaches started actively reaching out around fall of junior year, mainly by email first and then setting up a time to talk by phone. Some got his cell phone number from his current coach and then called or texted directly. This really picked up starting spring of junior year and into that summer.

Talks with coaches about making a verbal commitment started in spring of junior year and continued into fall of senior year. He could have committed as early as that spring of junior year but he took his time to weigh the options, visit schools, meet with coaches. If a coach has serious interest, he will ask your son to send him a high school transcript and any SAT scores and then he'll run it by the admissions department to see if he can get into the school. My son didn't verbally commit until fall of senior year. This seems to be very common timing. Most coaches understand it's a process and will politely allow kids the time to make their decision; others will apply a little more pressure. Word of advice: Take Your Time. He should tell the coach he's not quite ready to make a decision yet and, if you are afraid the offer will be pulled, then just ask if there's a deadline by which the coach needs a final answer.

I am providing a lot of detail here because I wish someone had told us all this before we experienced it for ourselves. There will be highs and lows during the recruiting process and it's very stressful - especially for the parents who will lose sleep over whether their son will ever find the right fit! And even when he finally makes his decision, it'll be a huge relief but you'll still worry. That's what we do as parents; but as long as your son is happy with his decision and excited about his future, that's what matters most.

I have a different perspective on timing. This is the first I have heard of someone who is heavily recruited making a verbal in spring senior year. That is very late based on our experience, but it’s interesting to learn. In our experience, most recruited kids know by fall senior year.

That’s been the schedule for our son too. There was one kid who hadn’t committed and the club coach called a friend. The other exception is when the money isn’t clear.

In our experience, the kids who get D1 $$ get sorted out Spring of Junior year into the summer. When the coaches decide who they want, the offer goes out and you are given a week to decide. If you decline, they extend an offer to the next kid on the list. That progresses until the $$ are all allocated. If you or they wait into the fall, the $$ are usually gone. At that point they are collecting depth players.

This is accurate although occasionally there is some money left by fall.

Yes, for the fall players they may have a little $ to work with, home help getting some other types of $$, and perhaps the hope of some $ in years to come should they earn some playing time.

OP here. I stated that my son verbally committed FALL of senior year. Not sure where you see it was SPRING of senior year?

dope interviews with Coach Josh Shapiro, Tufts and Coach Chris G, Northeastern. Both are "must reads" if you are interested in these schools or want to get a good read on life in D3 vs D1 soccer.

Good stuff thanks. Interesting how ambitious the tufts coach is but he plays it down to make it seem like D3 is much more laid back. I don't think that's really the case with the top D3 soccer schools. They take their soccer pretty seriously. Sounds like tufts is done with 2018s and is already looking for 2019s!!
