So would Stars White carry more cache for a school like Umass-Lowell than a DPL team or whatever league Aztec plays in? The answer should be no and that the coaches will look past that, but it’s probably wishful thinking and giving the coach too much credit.

UMass Lowell is probably one school that looks past the label but others local do not even they should.

In theory. In practice? Not so much. They use their limited recruiting resources to recruit from ECNL and a lesser degree GA. They would often rather take a weaker player from ECNL than a stronger one from DPL or wherever because one, it was easier to watch her play and two, at least they know she’s played top competition.

Yup and this is getting worse and worse for players outside ecnl and ga and I mean ecnl not ECRL for those parents. UMass Lowell may also be different because well it’s umass lowell and a player has to want that school if you have other options you might take them so UML casts a wider net to ECRL, Aztec etc. they lost a commit to stonehill as welll for. 2024. To the person sharing someone else’s story sounds like the player/parent doesn’t understand how recruiting works and nothing is promised until it’s final.

Trying to be intentionally vague since it’s not my story to share but one of my daughter’s good friends and HS teammate was being recruited by one of the schools on the “white” list this year. She is one of the physically strongest players I know (and yes my kids both play ECNL so I see a lot) with some unique skills and if she had came to Stars would undoubtedly be on at least White if not Blue. I don’t really know why she didn’t move to Stars except maybe financial reasons. School gave her the runaround for months and then ultimately said no. She was crushed. I think it’s their loss and it’s sad they would not give her a chance but you can’t deny ECNL carries weight. Right or wrong it just does. Hoping this girl lands a spot elsewhere because she’s a hidden gem.

That was me and I agree nothing is done until it’s finalized but from what I understand here she didn’t get a lot of D1 interest likely due to where she played and this particular school made it seem like they were about to offer and then changed their mind. She got her hopes up. I don’t think she turned anything else down but I don’t know. I don’t know if they don’t understand recruiting or just didn’t have options. In my humble opinion she should have been playing at stars and wouldn’t be in this situation but not my kid. I just feel for this girl as I have seen her play for the last 3 years and I know she can play. Whether it’s her parents or club coaches someone misguided her and now she has no offer.

If you picked a starting 11, Scorpions, SSS, Aztec and NEFC would take up a lot of the spots. Blue doesn’t have the market cornered on talent.

Think of a D1 college coach recruiting a player like someone hiring someone for a job. Because that’s pretty much what it is. If the recruit was from ECNL or GA and the new hire doesn’t work out … Well, that’s just the way it goes sometimes. If they stick their neck out and hire from somewhere else, they may be taking a risk.

More generally, it works pretty well to think of college coaches as overly busy, with limited budgets, and no mystical ability to predict the future of a player. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish overly busy from lazy.

Don’t get me started about assistant coaches.

And many NEPSAC coaches are a different breed. Some barely travel.
