How does that even work? Only 18 kids can dress in GA or ECNL on game day. Does who sits rotate or is it the same few kids?

Never accept a spot on one of these teams unless you are 100% sure that your kid will not be in a position to sit out. Most coaches will be up front about where they think a kid will fit in.

Often there's a few kids out with injuries or have to miss for other reasons. If they still ahve < 18 they usually they rotate who doesn't dress one day then include them the next day that same weekend.

For players 19+ is it even a question?

If your kid is #15 or higher you should seriously question if it's worth it, because chances are you won't be playing much. The coaching and/or competition better really top notch - and how often is that the case in youth soccer?

Sure yes it can happen. It's a dik move in the part of a coach but it can happen. Most will give them some time. It's why the point above about where your kid fits on a roster is a good one. If your kid isn't a starter or first round sub they may be better off somewhere else where they will play more.
