Club soccer is no different from any other parenting experience-- it's going to be gone before you know it, they'll be older and you'll look back and appreciate details you didn't realize were the real point of it. You think some NWSL's striker's parents wouldn't kill for one more drive to practice and ice cream stop on the way home? They sure as hell aren't savoring the time some troll got owned for their "powerlist" on a discussion board.

I mean, I will be, but I'm obviously depraved by even reading stuff here.

Not accurate at all. I actually found that there was always politics among the top group and having a top player made us privy to more BS than we were comfortable with. We had one girl who is a fantastic player, one of the best kids i've seen at this age, but other connected parents hated her and were so jealous that they were openly talking about calling the club to get her moved out or switched positions. They all pretended to be friends with her parents, who had no idea this was going on behind their back. It was really crazy to see this go on and that one minute they'd be super friendly with them and then other times talking about calls into the DOC and the coaches to push her out.

It definitely can happen. It's not frequent by any means but in all years years of club soccer there's been a few nasty parents on every team. Fortunately most parents tend to ignore them and treat them as the pariahs that they are, but if they get into the coach's ear watch out.

#1 rule: if a parent is talking smack about another player they will do the same for your kid. Don't even pretend to be friends with people like that.

Exactly, which is why my advice is to always be cordial and have fun but just be careful and pay attention. If something seems rotten, it probably is. Most people are good but there are some who will do anything and screw anyone to push their kid ahead. My opinion is that aside from some sort of obviously dangerous situation, a parent should never really be talking to a club about someone else's kid.

I would love a Christopher Guest movie "Best in State" about club soccer pettiness and intrigue.
