My 2007 is on an ECNL team and there was a steady stream of kids trying out practices before the virus hit. Its not surprising considering the instability of GDA.

Au contraire...we have a dozen threads on here referencing how poor the GPS is, from the players to the coaches to the administrators to the guy who empties the trash cans.

Not until ECNL swallows some pride and realizes they don't need to drive go to Maryland to get a game, and can do that just fine by staying in New England. Just aren't enough roster spots to fit "players from all over the place".

While you are 100% right that no league NEEDS to drive to MD to get a game, and you are 100% right that the market would prefer to unify the leagues and keep our games in at least Northeast, you are 100% wrong that a drive to MD EVERY OTHER YEAR will deter even one family from choosing ECNL (except maybe you I guess. You have a line!.)

Unnecessary travel is a part of club soccer. You agree to the showcases, and a few seasonal games that require hotels. You make the most of it and create a few memories along the way.

SSS goes to out of state tournaments in PA, CT, VA & NC every year starting at U10 for their top teams. It’s not an ECNL issue, it’s a club soccer culture issue.

Exactly. It's gotten out of control with the addition of more leagues and clubs they're all afraid to play each other locally. God forbid they lose to a nearby competitor! It didn't used to be like this and not even that long ago. You rarely travelled out of state, especially for any league games; maybe R1 or ODP or the holiday weekend tournaments. and Almost never was there something that required a flight.

None of this will change unless 1) all the various league organizers decide to work together (seems unlikely given the money and egos involved) 2) parents stop buying into the madness. Covid will cause some to drop out or move to cheaper/less travel options but its unlikely to result in a cosmic shift.

Forget all the doomsday talk. If your kid leaves her top team spot for a team with local travel there will be five other kids jockeying for the spot she vacated.

Some weak clubs won't make it, possibly some league consolidation at the lower levels, but that's it. If GDA disappears it won't be because of Covid 19 but because it was a flawed execution. If BDA changes it's because MLS clubs pull out.

What lower leagues? All we have is NEP.

Are CT and PAE too far for a tournament? I dont even mind the drive to Jeff Cup with my kids (at middle school ages and up only, not younger than that).

The problem is moronic parents who think they only way for their "Elite" kid on an "Elite" team needs to go travel 4 hours to find another "Elite" team to play.

It's a marketing ploy, and you bought it.

                              P.T. Barnum would be proud.

No, dum dum. There is a literal campaign against all things GPS, players too. So, not sure why anyone would want these players based on what I am reading on TS.
