My 2007 is on an ECNL team and there was a steady stream of kids trying out practices before the virus hit. Its not surprising considering the instability of GDA.

Unnecessary travel is a part of club soccer. You agree to the showcases, and a few seasonal games that require hotels. You make the most of it and create a few memories along the way.

SSS goes to out of state tournaments in PA, CT, VA & NC every year starting at U10 for their top teams. It’s not an ECNL issue, it’s a club soccer culture issue.

None of this will change unless 1) all the various league organizers decide to work together (seems unlikely given the money and egos involved) 2) parents stop buying into the madness. Covid will cause some to drop out or move to cheaper/less travel options but its unlikely to result in a cosmic shift.

Forget all the doomsday talk. If your kid leaves her top team spot for a team with local travel there will be five other kids jockeying for the spot she vacated.

It's a marketing ploy, and you bought it.
P.T. Barnum would be proud.
