Is it really news to people that D1 athletics are selective? Life is tough and sometimes things don't work out even when you go in eyes wide open... If he does have the skill/confidence and the opportunity to play in a challenging situation; who is anyone to say he shouldn't go? Because he's from MA or may fail? My only advice would be to make any decision based on the kids own ideas and solid advice from good sources--most 17yr olds are smarter than you think--

The college coach is incented to fill up the practice squad, and there's no downside to them bringing in extra kids. Some club coaches are happy to have the player being able to say they went D1 (I don't actually believe most club coaches would be dishonest in assessments, but lots of club coaches don't actually know enough to fairly assess either). If your eyeshadow are wide open, more power to you for striving to reach the highest possible level, and some of those kids will keep working and eventually get on the field, even to the coach's surprise. One can never know what all these kids were thinking, but when you look at the stats and see all the kids who aren't even on the roster by junior year, at least I have a hard time believing that that they all went in understanding the odds that this is where they'd end up.

And overall many don't get what a commitment this all is, even D3, and don't put the work in once they get there (or they're overwhemed with playing a college sport and school). Player churn is very common at all levels

Shame on any parent who after 6-8 years of watching their kid play in various settings and against ranges of talent fins himself duped in the end.[/QUOTE]
Really? I have been following my kid who is a sophomore and other club players for years now an can't figure it out... Our town is the biggest youth soccer town in the state and our HS plays in the BSL. It is VERY hard to make the varsity soccer team. One recent kid was a HS All Star and DAP player who never made it on the field in college. Another kid who I read about in the town paper was a so - so HS player at best made the college player team of the week.

that's so interesting. Plus think of the 'top' recruits that might go D1 but end up not playing much at all, even though they were designated as the top at the time. Things change and maybe these players are all still developing even as they progress in college?
