To make an early offer, a coach should be very sure that that player is a good fit - with D1 schools especially Ivy league, they must have a lot to choose from, right? Granted they need to meet the admissions criteria (or at least be on the low end of it). So what is it that a coach sees in a local player that he won't get from a player from Europe or Africa where the talent pool is much greater.

    Cases in point:
NP (Bolts NPL, Reading HS) Brown
    CA (Seacoast) Brown
SLL (Seacoast) - Harvard - got offer late Junior year
MR (Nobles, Revs) Dartmouth - got offer late Junior year
SH (Worcester Academy, FC Stars) Columbia
Your son can get an early look in 10th grade at the showcase events or camps, but, yes, it is the big events post-college season, starting in December of your son's junior year. Mid-year senior year is very late and is dependent on a coach not already having filled his roster.

Can't disagree with this timing but it depends too- there's a sliding scale, and while the more competitive schools are likely mostly filled up, other schools have the flexibility to take an appropriate player right up until the end (and spots can open up at the competitive schools too when "committed" players change their mind). My point is- don't give up if you really want to play, although your range of options will decrease as time passes.

It isn't a bad idea to try one local, easy to get to, one day camp in sophomore year to just dip your toes in the water and get a sense of what they're like. We did that and it helped my son better focus on what he was looking for soccer and school wise.

OP here. The NSCAA hasn't always published the POY and the Gatorade player sometimes differs, but here is my best shot.

                2009 Chalie Rugg BC
                2010 Derek McCaffrey BU/Louisville
                Leon Brown ND

                2012 Oliver White Harvard
                2013 Mac Steeves PC

How are people getting this information for this list? nobody signs until winter--is this just a word of mouth thing?

The players have "verbally committed", and then somebody (the player/parents, DAP/club /prep coach) posts it. At this point, many D3 kids who applied ED will be getting formally accepted, so you might see more of those posted.

Yup. A lot of D1 ED out too. A lot of kids also keeping it private. Unless a regular poster finds out and updates the list.

OP here. There are about a dozen websites I use to develop this list. Occasionally someone adds a name I suspect from word of mouth or personal knowledge. I try to verify those entries if possible. But historically the lists are nearly 100% correct for the given time frame. The D2/3 lists are accurate for who is there but are missing around 25% of the total players at least. D1 is very close. Then reality steps in and we see who is rosetted and plays.

lol our town paper just had their annual "letter signing" photo op of kids "committed" to playing in college. Yes the school should be proud of athletes who will play at some level in college. But please stop staying they are signing LOIs when 1) many are for D3 programs so there is no LOI and 2) the legit LOI isn't until Feb 1.

Title of thread is "verbal commitments".

                                Who said signed LOI?
