Believe it or not this above is the competitive soccer pyramid in this country. One thing to be clear about is that there is nothing arbitrary about what levels different leagues are on. The USSF controls it all and dictates which soccer entities exist and where they fit. On the youth stage there are only 2 distinct levels, the Development Academies and everyone else. The DA's are at the top because USSF says they are at the top and that functionally ends all discussion. Any talk of defying USSF or breaking leagues off to go do their own thing is nothing more than the idle musings of uninformed people. The slight of hand addition of NEFC to the ECNL is pretty much an admission that the ECNL was put in their place by USSF and told to get with the program. 6 months ago there was no way NEFC would have been allowed into the ECNL because of the detrimental impact it would have had on the Stars and Scorpions. Those type of situations though are the very reason the ECNL was not made into the Girls DAP. Their exclusionary policies literally prevented thousands of players from entering it rendering it pretty much useless as a developmental pipe line and their revenue policies functionally drove up the cost of soccer in this country putting another barrier in front of player development. Unless we see USSF split off the ECNL from USCS and sanction it as a separate entity the ECNL as we now know it is destined to change. Realistically it must in order to survive.

Here is what I would like to see happen. I would like the ECNL to drop it's requirement that all member clubs field teams in every age group. I would then like them to open up the ECNL so that on a team by team basis any USCS member club could put a team into it. I would then turn the ECNL more into a champions league by instituting a promo-relegation process between the ECNL and NPL. I believe that this would truly strengthen the level of competition in both leagues and create something analogues to the USYS National League only on a grander scale. Most important though it would add some sanity to the youth level giving it functionally 3 distinct levels - one for the pro level players, one for the college bound players and one for the more recreational level players - that would be essentially mirrored in the two sanctioning youth bodies.

This demonstrates you fundamentally misunderstand the relationship between USCS, USYS and US Soccer.

In other words you want to go back to the days where teams were ripped apart year in year out as teams got related? Horrible, stupid idea.

As opposed to keeping hundred of watered down teams around so the clubs can collect fees? Is that really better? The worry back in the day was that there was no place for relegated to play. Can't say that's the case these days. There are plenty of places to play, there's just no quality.

It was USCS that sent everyone down the expensive hype driven rabbit hole. They themselves won't even acknowledge whether there is a difference between the ECNL and NPL so who doesn't understand? They're the ones that ultimately sandbagged the ECNL and the ECNL leadership was too arrogant and stupid to see it coming.

In case you missed it, the ECNL is forming a boys league. Welcome to the insanity where the soccer is judged by the thickness of your bankroll.

Compelling. How about a few credible and specific details based on direct involvement over 2-3 years?
