There are plenty of strong teams in NPL and plenty of weak teams in ECNL (as well as the strong).
Generally, you see the strong teams like NEFC and Stars with some ridiculous cumulative goals for/against ratios. So the travel for competition thing doesn't even ring true. If the competition were all to play in one league (e.g. NEFC and the best NPL vs Stars and the best local ECNL ...)
Lastly - a nice referendum on GotSoccer points - Stars U15 ECNL beats "national #1 ranked"(by GS) Princeton. The Princeton team has been to 10 tournaments in the last 10 months. That seems a little much - hopefully they are enjoying the ride.

does not matter in a college showcase. What matter is your particular child's speed of play, or noted lack there of by the college coaches.

U12g dad question here. If winning does not matter at collage showcases then why do they record the score even. Serious question. I have no clue

You have to keep score to keep competition at the max. How could that be done without points and scores.
The college coaches could care less about wins and loses but necessary for competition.

- Answer: well duh, for parental bragging rights.
To keep parents engaged. To pump up their interest in spending the necessary cash on travel etc.
