If your kid wants drugs, he/shee does not have to go to Vermont to get them

Check out any college roster - 25 to 30 is the norm

Yes it is. And on top men's programs 10 come from overseas.

Five isn't but I've seen four often enough, usually a freshman who is redshirted. Three would be better. I saw one school, I think a D2 down south, who I swear had over 40 players. If I can find it I'll post the link. It was more like a football team.

I have no particular reason to defend UVM, but I'm not sure people are aware of what it has to offer- this could explain why it has traditionally not had as strong a group of MA players as one might have thought. I think people in Boston just think snow and cold (which is definitely part of the deal- makes sense that they would pick up the Icelandic players).

Nothing to do-check any publication you want for best college town. Good food, craft beer, friendly people.

Not much around it- gee, just the best skiing and mountain biking in the east, a major lake for water sports, and an hour drive to Montreal.

$50+K a year- Yup, really expensive, but it is called a "Public Ivy" by some. That's a bit much, but like any big state school, you can get a really good education if you try. Certainly it's academic reputation is above all the other state universities in New England.

Opiod crisis- Yup, VT has issues, but last I checked so did we. I doubt the kids going to play soccer at UVM have availability of hard drugs on their wish list.

How about the soccer though? Rankings had them below BC/BU/Harvard, and in the same bucket as Colgate/U MA Lowell. If you saw them lose to BC in the NCAAs last year, UVM gave BC a good run. I would have thought they'd get more MA players, but maybe they figure the Boston schools scoop most of the talent and don't bother, and instead focus on northern kids (the star striker is Canadian).

UVM is that expensive for out of staters? Coach has done a good job there. I noticed a couple of transfers from Procidence. Look for more kids to be recruited from the prep schools in coming years.

I have no particular reason to promote UVM either, but I am a fan and the even bigger fan of Burlington as a place to attend college or live. Certainly too white, like the rest of VT, but otherwise you can't beat Burlington as a vibrant, hip small city.

I don't agree that UVM is unknown. I think you will find that UVM is on the college visits lists of a good percentage of Mass college applicants, and probably makes the top 5 or 6 for a good number of kids. In the end, though, most would have hard time rationalizing UVM as a final pick over UMass or higher ranked schools with similar cost. I do not agree that UVM is considered the top public in New England...certainly a stronger rep than UNH, Maine and URI, but not stronger than UMass or UConn. I would view the top 3 as basically even. Certainly nowhere near the real "public Ivies" like Michigan, UVA, UNC, UCLA, Cal, etc.

                        Comment

Tough thing for UVM is that almost any other D1 school not named Dartmouth is a decent bus ride away (at least by New England standards).

My 2nd most favorite NE city, behind Portland, ME. I could eat and drink all day and all night there. Hope my kid considers it.

Burlington and Portland are the same city just in different states
